NCIS VI (3/4/17) @ Cave Spring HS (Roanoke, VA)

Postby kamikaze » Tue Jan 17, 2017 11:58 am

The Cave Spring High School Academic Team is happy to announce our spring tournament being held at our school (3712 Chapparal Dr., Roanoke, VA, 24018) on March 4, 2017. The NCIS VI will use the NAQT IS-164. We are also introducing something new this year to our tournament: The addition of a MIDDLE SCHOOL DIVISION. We will secure a middle school packet set from NAQT should there be enough interest in the division (let's say, at least, six teams). We are hoping that winter weather won't be too bad that weekend but if so, we'll postpone to a later weekend.

AFFILIATION: The top 15% of the field will automatically qualify for the HSNCT held by NAQT. This year, the HSNCT will be in Atlanta. Should the middle school division also be available and run, the top 15% of the middle school field will qualify for the MSNCT, which is in Dallas this year. We are seeking PACE affiliation so that the top contenders can compete in the PACE NSC tournament on June 10th and 11th later this year.

QUESTIONS: For the high school division, we are using NAQT's IS-164 set. For the middle school division, we tentatively have MS-21 assigned to us from NAQT.

FORMAT: Our field cap is around 18 but we reserve the right to expand the field should we find enough moderators. Each round will be 20 questions with 20 bonus questions, untimed. We're trying to guarantee at least eight rounds of competition but depending on the field and what the majority of teams want, we can try to accommodate by doing more rounds. Trophies will be given to the top three teams and we usually award the top ten individuals with some sort of prize. Neg King/Queen award is also available.

REGISTRATION AND FEES:
* Base fee: $70 per team. There is no limit to the number of teams who can attend from one school.
* Buzzer discount: $5 off school's total fee for each fully functional system (control box and eight activators all work; max 2 buzzer systems per school)
* Travel discount: $15 off school's total fee if you have to travel more than 150 miles as determined by Google Maps.
* New team discount: High school teams that have never been to the CSI or NCIS may receive a 50% discount on their first team registered (any additional teams from that school have to be brought in at full price).
Minimum fee: $35

TEAM & ROSTER SIZE: There may be a maximum of six players on one team's roster, up to four of whom may play at one time. There will be no exceptions to this rule. If you bring more than six players, you must register a second team to have all of them play. There is a halftime substitution opportunity in each game. Each player may appear on only one team's roster throughout the day-no switching from the B team to the A team, etc. Teams may also play shorthanded with only three players.

FOOD: As always, we will provide a simple breakfast, free of charge. We have been providing a simple lunch consisting of pizza, fruit, chips and a drink for lunch at a reasonable price. If you have any questions or wish to register, feel free to contact Bob Powers at csquizbowl@gmail.com or at (540) 772-7550. We look forward to seeing you all here and hope for some good weather that weekend.

I wanted to give some results before I retire for the evening. Congratulations to Norfolk Academic Guild A for clearing the field today and winning 1st place in the high school division. Rockbridge County A finished in second place with Virginia Episcopal School in third. The top two places qualify to compete at the HSNCT later this season while the top three qualify for the PACE NSC. In the middle school division, Norfolk Academic Guild MS A also went undefeated and finished in first place. Cave Spring MS A finished in second place. Full results will be posted some time tomorrow.

I want to thank those individuals who came out to help us today: Eric Chang from VT, Joshua Duncan, Joe Johnson, Alex Tabor, Dr. Niels Christensen, as well as a couple of our alumnae. We couldn't have done it without you guys moderating. For those of you who attended the tournament and have specific questions or comments you wish to address, please contact csquizbowl@gmail.com. Thanks!
