I am happy to announce our 11th annual Cave Spring Invitational (CSI) will take place at Cave Spring High School in scenic southwest Virginia. We've scheduled our tournament for November 19, 2016.
AFFILIATION: We are a PLATINUM level certified tournament from PACE. The top 25% of the field will automatically qualify for national tournament to be held later in the season.
QUESTIONS: We have secured the WHAQ housewrite for our tournament. If you want to see what their distribution is like, click on the following link: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewto ... 09&t=18660
FORMAT: Our field cap is 24 teams but we reserve the right to expand the field should we find enough moderators. We are going to guarantee ten rounds of competition for everyone, at least. Trophies will be given to the top three teams and we usually award the top ten individuals with some sort of prize. Neg King/Queen award is also available. We also have other contests going on throughout the day that kids can participate in and win prizes.
REGISTRATION AND FEES:
-The fee structure is as follows:
Base fee: $70 per team. There is no limit to the number of teams who can attend from one school.
Buzzer discount: $5 off school's total fee for each fully functional system (control box and eight activators all work; max of 2 buzzer systems)
Early registration: $5 off if you commit a month before the tournament date (October 19)
Travel discount: $15 off school's total fee if you have to travel more than 150 miles as determined by Google Maps.
New team discount: Teams that have never been to the CSI or NCIS may receive a 50% discount on their first team registered (any additional teams from that school have to be brought in at full price).
Minimum fee: $35
TEAM & ROSTER SIZE: There may be a maximum of six players on one team's roster, up to four of whom may play at one time. There will be no exceptions to this rule. If you bring more than six players, you must register a second team to have all of them play. There is a halftime substitution opportunity in each game. Each player may appear on only one team's roster throughout the day-no switching from the B team to the A team, etc. Teams may also play shorthanded with only three players.
FOOD: As always, we will provide a simple breakfast, free of charge. We have been providing a simple lunch consisting of pizza, fruit, chips and a drink for lunch at a reasonable price.
HOTEL: We are trying to get discounts to nearby accommodations for schools who may want to spend the night. If you need more information, please feel free to contact me about suitable lodging.
COACHES CHALLENGE: Any coach/adult/reader not affiliated with Cave Spring HS is eligible to play. Top winners will some sort of prize to recognize their achievement. The format will be similar to last year, where all contestants do a 20-25 question worksheet at the time of registration. The highest qualifying scores will compete in a short buzzer match after lunch and before playoff announcements.
STUDENT CHALLENGE: We offer a side event in the morning for any high school player to participate in. Students will be show a slideshow of various scenes, all revolving around a theme, and are asked to identify as many as they can. The highest score will be rewarded with a prize during the individual awards.
