Gonna go ahead and post what I know since I won't be able to get the calendar up until next week most likely:

Glasgow is hosting their season kickoff tournament again on August 27. Louisville is (tentatively) hosting our fall tournament on October 8. Kentucky is hosting their fall tournament on October 29. WKU is hosting their fall tournament on November 19.

Anybody else that is hosting a tournament this year should feel free to post in the thread, and I'll add to the calendar when I can.

Fleming County Academic Tournament will be January 7, 2017. We plan on using pretty much the same format and HSAPQ's VHSL set.

The annual fall high school quizbowl tournament at the University of Louisville has been renamed the Casey Young Memorial Tournament. Casey was a quizbowl player at both Simon Kenton and UofL who passed away over the summer. The tournament will be held on October 8 on UofL's campus, and will use NAQT IS-159A.

The announcement for this year's Goldenrod Cup is posted. The next event is the Casey Young Memorial Tournament at the University of Louisville on October 8. We are still accepting tournaments for affiliation this year, so if you have a high school event you are planning but just haven't announced it yet, let us know soon. Last year we had record participation by Kentucky teams in pyramidal quizbowl tournaments, the number of which has stabilized in recent years. I think Kentucky quizbowl is moving in a very positive direction and hope this year is an even more smashing success!

I am thrilled to see some new tournaments this year, but having two tournaments in the same half of the state on the same day isn't ideal for anybody involved. I would encourage hosts to check and see if the dates for their tournaments do not conflict with something already announced, because it won't be easy to draw a good field if there is a conflict.

Field update for the 19th Annual FCAT

Fleming Co. x2
Johnson Central x2
Daviess Co. x1
Dunbar x3
Ft. Thomas Highlands x1
Paintsville x2
Simon Kenton x2
Campbell Co. x2
Bishop Brossart x1
Ashland x3
Raceland x1
Woodford Co. x3
Danville x1
Manual x2
Russell x2
Glasgow x1
Rowan Co. x1

As usual we will be using HSAPQ questions in a modified Governor's Cup format. (40 toss ups with single part bonuses, bounce back will be in effect. No powers or negs)

Entry fee is $70 for the first team and $35 for additional teams. We require teams to bring a reader or scorer and a working buzzer system.

Everyone gets a minimum of 6 matches. Morning prelims will be used to seed afternoon pools.

We will seek PACE affiliation (no work yet but it hasn't been a problem in the past).

We are capped at 32 teams, and quickly approaching our limit. Interested parties should contact me at [email protected]

FCAT field update:

Fleming Co. x1
Johnson Central x2
Daviess Co. x1
Dunbar HS x3
Ft. Thomas Highlands x1
Paintsville x2
Simon Kenton x2
Campbell Co. x2
Bishop Brossart x1
Ashland x3
Raceland x1
Woodford Co. x3
Danville x1
Manual x2
Russell x2
Glasgow x1
Rowan Co. x1
Henderson Co. x2
Ballard x1

Based on Goldenrod Cup standings and last year's State Governor's Cup this may well be our strongest tournament yet.

We do plan on using our hybrid NAQT/Governor's Cup format (20 toss ups per half with single part bonus. Bounce back rules do apply).

That puts us as cap. If need I can open a wait list.

Congratulations to Dunbar High School on their 2017 Fleming County Academic Tournament championship.

Dunbar won a half match play in to earn the final spot (over Campbell Co.) in the championship pools. From there they managed victories over: Daviess Co., Henderson Co. (A), and Ashland (A) on their way to a championship showdown with Glasgow.

Final standings for the varsity division:
1. Dunbar (6-1)
2. Glasgow (6-1)
3. Henderson Co. A (6-1)
4. Danville (5-2)
5/6. Daviess Co./Russell (A)
7/8. Simon Kenton/Ashland (A)
9. Campbell Co. (A)
10. Henderson Co. (B)
11. Raceland
12. Ballard
13. Highlands
14. Rowan Co.

Also: congratulations to Dunbar's B and C teams for their championship and runner up finishes in the "B" division of the FCAT.

Despite the weather we had a total of 22 teams that braved the frozen tundra of Fleming County for the 19th annual FCAT.

Thanks to all participants and especially to our volunteer workforce.

The Kentucky Quizbowl Alliance is excited to announce the details for our high school and middle school state championship tournaments in 2017:

The NAQT Kentucky State Championship for high school teams will be March 4 on the campus of Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, KY. Logistical information can be found in the tournament announcement thread, teams may register on the NAQT website, and questions can be directed to tournament director Matthew Riggle at wkuquizbowl (at) gmail (dot) com

The KQBA Middle School State Championship will be April 15 at Noe Middle School in Louisville, KY. Logistical information can be found in the tournament announcement thread, teams may register on the NAQT website, and questions can be directed to tournament director Jason Thompson at jason_thompson (at) twc (dot) com

We look forward to the best high school and middle school teams in Kentucky competing for these titles, and also continue to watch with interest as teams finish competing for the Goldenrod Cup over the next three months.

I think it's a good thing that Dunbar and duPont Manual's chokehold on the title of the best team in the commonwealth has loosened. Though part of this is because Dunbar and Manual seem less interested in attending tournament than they were five years ago, teams like Woodford County, Henderson County, Glasgow, Danville, and Campbell County are stepping forward. If teams like Raceland-Worthington, Madisonville North Hopkins, Simon Kenton, Russell, and Daviess County can join them, Kentucky will be a state that's competitive well beyond what it "should" be by demographics.

I know it's very early but I did want to go on and announce that Fleming County High School is planning to host the 20th Annual Fleming County Academic Tournament January 6th, 2018.

More details will be available in the fall, but we plan to keep things pretty much the same. 32 team cap, toss up/bonus/bounce back. Single part bonuses. Prelims used to reseed the playoffs...the standard format that we've used for the last several years.

We will also seek Goldenrod Cup and PACE affiliation when the time comes.

Until then, have a great remainder of the school year,

SSNCT went very, very well for Kentucky teams: Glasgow defeated Danville in the Traditional Public School final, while Raceland-Worthington finished 5th and Russell was tied for 8th.

Please mark your calendars for the 3rd Annual Scottie to be held at Glasgow High School on Saturday, August 26th of 2017. Lots more info to come later.
(It's really the 4th one, but I don't know how many remember the first attempt back in 2012  )
