Just wondering, who all from the boards is going to ACE?

I'm returning for my second year, and bringing along the other half of our senior class for next year.

as of today, 163 at Maryville College in TN and 103 at SEMO in Cape Girardeau, MO.

we still have room at both places if anyone wants to add.

That is my preference for my kids if their schedules allow. This year, the 8-9 that can go, can go during the SEMO dates.

I think I'm going to be the only one from Rockford (IL) Auburn attending at SEMO, but we do have a freshman, Matt Hargrove, who will be going to the one in Tennessee. Unfortunately, most of our players either had conflicts or are macho guys who couldn't bring themselves to attend something like quiz bowl camp. My friend Emily, who came with me last year, is quitting quiz bowl entirely... so that's it for our team.

I (Andy Wilson) and I think four others from Fremd (including Alex Beata, one of our All-Staters from last year) in Illinois are going to Maryville for ACE this year (we had vacation conflicts with SEMO). It's too bad we're missing most of the other Illinoisians (who normally go to SEMO), but hopefully the content will be just as good and give us the head start we need for next year.

Four Juniors-to-be from Tippecanoe HS in Ohio will be at SEMO. Just about all of them are returnees from last year.

I'm going to SEMO, even though its farther, because of scheduling problems, and I was just wondering what airport people might be flying into, and when, since transportation is usually cheaper if one has a group.

Savannah is bringing 8 players this year. Hopefully at least 3 or 4 of which will be competitive. Unfortunately I don't get to experience Mr. Barry's Social Studies II class again. I'm taking one for the team and taking Science II or I depending upon what the classes offer.

Alright, I think this is my last question (and since camp starts in less than 24 hours, there's a good chance this won't get answered, but hey, I'm curious) for the camp vets/directors. Is it two to a dorm room or are they singles? I'd assume double, but I dunno. I don't really care either way, I was just curious.

They are 2 to a dorm, and each dorm shares a shower with one other dorm, which beats the heck out of community showers. The dorms are pretty decent too.

Uhh...David? That was last year at New Hall. Don't know if you got the message, but we're in one of the Towers this year, the 4 dorm towers at the cafeteria site. Our bathroom situation is thusly unknown, though we're told to "prepare for community bathrooms." Hopefully it compares favorably to New Hall, because that was absolutely sweet.

And yeah, I'd assume it's still 2 to a dorm room. The two dorm styles I've heard of are New Hall (what David described) and the one at the band camp I go to, 2 to a room, a certain amount of rooms to a single (or sometimes 2) community bathrooms with showers.

ETA: I forgot to mention one thing to give us all a scant sliver of hope: They've been renovating the Towers, so it might not be community etcs. I doubt it though. Eh, oh well.

Four years ago, I went to the camp and stayed in the towers. It's two to a room, community showers and bathroom, and the food is friggin awesome, when I went it was an all-you-can-eat buffet with good food.

Well, all I can say is that after the New Hall, the Towers seem quite a letdown, now that I'm here. The food should be the same, though.

It would be funny if those of us that are here just kept communicating with each other through the boards.

It took awhile to find where I was going, but I finally got there. Still haven't met roommate-his stuff his here, but he's out. Just kind of waiting until orientation.

Dorms seem okay. Hooray for one bathroom a floor!

Any predictions for the subject tournaments?

In lit, Chris Ray and Julie Reynolds will almost certainly be in the top three, with the third spot up for grabs between four or five others (based on the first quiz and some buzzer practice in lit 2).

Yeah, but with Chris not taking/not being allowed to take the second test, who could be behind. Other dark horses include Colleen, Elizabeth from Kentucky, and Ryan R. Also, that other Ryan, who's last name is currently escaping me

Highlight of camp so far: Last night when we were down by 30 going into the last practice, and I got the tossup, and we got the two bonus parts to tie it. Or, Mr. Barry saying, "In the South, nighty night means GO TO FREAKING BED!"

The Ryan mentioned above is Ryan Stander from Liberty, MO. I have no idea how he's been doing on the quizzes; he hasn't been recognized for top scores, but he could still be doing well enough for a handicap of three or four. Terin from Savannah seems to know a lot of random stuff but maybe not have a really strong background in lit. She's been acing the quizzes, though, so she's someone to watch in the finals.

In response to Trevkeeper's above post, one of the highlights of my week has been Mr. Garrick, the Lit 2 teacher, coming out of nowhere with: "I was raised Southern Baptist. I got my degree in English at Furman University and I learned to love pornography." Mr. Luce of Savannah, MO going on a rant about scrawny chickens during a discussion on the barter system in the Ancient History minor was pretty funny, too.

Math: Justin (John?) S. (Carbondale)

Lit: Colleen P. (Rockford Auburn)

Overall, it was a really fun camp. I learned a ton, and I'll learn even more when I go over all my sheets and notes. I met some people from the boards (styxman, mrs dalloway, DumbJacques, mentalchocolate), and they were cool. Hopefully what I learned will help the team do well this year, as we have a lot of work to do.

Maybe some of my teammates will go next year, if I go...I was one of about 5 kids there all by their lonesome.
