Mt. Carmel Invitational (New Orleans, LA; 12/5/2015)

On behalf of Mount Carmel Academy, I would like to invite you to the Mount Carmel Invitational, which will be held on Saturday, December 5th and is open to any high school teams.

The tournament will use NAQT rules and question set IS-152. Rounds will be untimed 20/20 with no computational math tossups or bonuses. Complete rules are available at http://www.naqt.com/rules.html . Sample questions of similar style and difficulty are available at http://www.naqt.com/samples/invitational-series.pdf . Teams will be divided into different pools for the morning rounds; afternoon matches will feature teams of similar ability levels competing against each other. The exact format will depend upon the number of teams, but should guarantee each team 8 or 9 games plus any necessary tiebreakers.

Schedule (subject to change):
Registration: 8:00-8:30
Meeting for players and coaches: 8:40-9:00
Preliminary rounds: 9:00-12:00
Lunch: 12:00-1:00
Individual awards ceremony: 1:00-1:10
Playoff rounds: 1:15-3:30
Trophy ceremony: 3:30-3:45

We will be providing complimentary donuts, milk, and juice in the morning. For lunch, several fast food restaurants are within walking distances, and several others are within a few minutes' drive.

The field size will be capped at 18 teams. Each school may register up to two teams. The base fee for each team is $50. There is a $10 discount for bringing an experienced reader who can work the entire day of the tournament, and a $5 discount for a fully functional buzzer system with at least eight working buzzers. Please make checks payable to “Mount Carmel Academy.” You may bring a check or cash on the day of the tournament, or you may mail a check to Mt. Carmel Academy, 7027 Milne Blvd., New Orleans, LA 70124. Please write "quiz bowl" on the envelope or the memo line of the check.

Team trophies will be provided to the winner and runner-up. Individual trophies will be provided to the top 4 individual scorers (based on the results of the preliminary rounds).

We've reached our limit of 18 teams and have a waitlist. We can increase the field to 24 teams if staffers are available, so if you're interested in staffing, please let me know. If any teams interested in playing in the tournament could bring a staffer, that would be greatly appreciated.

In a game that went down to the very last bonus part, Jesuit A defeated Jesuit B in a tiebreaker match to win the Mount Carmel Invitational. Full stats will be posted later tonight.

After seven preliminary rounds, the top two teams from each group advanced, with the result between the two advancing teams carrying over to the playoff. With Jesuit A, Episcopal School of Acadiana A, and Jesuit B finishing 2-1 in the playoffs, Jesuit A received a bye due to having more points in the three playoff games. ESA and Jesuit B mutually agreed on a half-game tiebreaker, which Jesuit B won 145-105. Jesuit A and Jesuit B opted for a full match in the decider, with Jesuit A erasing a 130-point second-half deficit to win 320-315.

Trophies for top scorers in the prelims went to Anthony Stoner (Jesuit A), Betsy Hogan (Lusher A), Bryce Monier (St. Martin's A), and Caleb Rogers (Jesuit B).
