The state of Missouri confuses me. Which of these is the "state championship"? I hope it is whichever one required me to edit 150-character questions about driver's ed for three years.

As I understand it, the only tournament which gets to be designated a "state championship" is MSHSAA, but the "NAQT Missouri Qualifier" is an event by a different name which is designed to provide the same single-day experience to teams state-wide as NAQT States events elsewhere do. Not sure if the Qualifier got an extra bid in years past when it was NAQT policy to award those from their single-day states events.

Matt's understanding is correct, as far as I know.

The Missouri qualifier, like our state championship series, does result in the issue of a new invitation to HSNCT and SSNCT (even if that team finishes outside the top 15% of the field).

(The entity that we cut back on this year is the "reserved berth to HSNCT for the state champion," not the "at least one new team is invited to HSNCT" part.)

Yes, the Missouri qualifier is for all intents and purposes equivalent to other "state championships" via NAQT, but we are expressly forbidden from calling it a "championship" due to MSHSAA policy. Other than the name, the event is identical. What's confusing is that now, NAQT is also the question provider for the "official" Missouri state championship...
