New Trier Varsity, IL (12/20/14)

Post by Stained Diviner »

The 2014 New Trier Varsity Tournament will take place on December 20. We will have an Über-Competitive Division and a Standard Division. The Über-Competitive Division is scheduled to play on the DEES Set, which is a Regular Difficulty College Set. The Standard Division is scheduled to play on the HSAPQ 53 Set, which is a Regular Difficulty High School Set. The tournament is being directed by myself, Carolyn Gerhardt, and Ben Yang.

To register for the tournament, use the attached Entry Form. To reserve spots for a team or apply to staff, contact me at [email protected] or post below.

Because the two divisions are using different questions, and the Über-Competitive Division questions are very difficult for high school students, we are allowing all teams to register for the division of their choice. This means that there may be some very strong teams in the Standard Division. The tournament format will be determined based on the number of entries for each division. When you register, please let me know how many teams you want in each division.

This competition will follow ACF rules, including 4-on-4, neg penalties, and no bouncebacks on bonuses. The Standard Division will use powers, but the Über-Competitive Division will not use powers.

The cost is $80 per team, which covers lunch for the students and coach. There is not a buzzer discount, but we expect teams to bring buzzers unless they have a good reason not to. Teams traveling long distances or who are in financial hardship can request a discount. Teams do not have to submit questions to play in the Über-Competitive Division.

My team's a little sketchy since it's the Saturday before Christmas, but we'll reserve an Uber-spot, please.

Will the Über-Competitive Division be using the full 21 tossups in each DEES packet?

Our staffing level is starting to become a concern. We will accept any team that enters this tournament by the end of the day December 1, but after that we may or may not accept teams based on staffing levels and getting field numbers that fit into a good format.

I am capping the fields at 16 and 42 for now. If the Über-Competitive Division stays at 14, that's OK too.

We are now full, and a waitlist is starting. Teams at the top of the waitlist will have a good chance of getting into the field.

Über-Competitive Division
Matches are 4-on-4. Each match consists of 21/21 with neg penalties, no powers, no bonus rebounds, and ties determined by the first point change on a tossup.

There are 14 teams divided into two pools of seven teams each. In the first 7 rounds, each team will play each opponent within their pool and one crossover match. The crossover match will not have any bearing at all on the tournament at any point. If we can start Round 7 in all rooms by 12:15, then we will do so. Otherwise, Round 7 will be after lunch.

The top four teams from each pool will be in the top afternoon pool. If necessary, tiebreaker matches will be played to determine which teams are in the top four of each pool, using a full packet for a two-way tie or half packets for a tie involving more than two teams. Morning ties that do not impact which teams are in the top four will not be played off.

In the top afternoon pool, morning results against teams within both the morning pool and afternoon pool will carry over. There will be four rounds of matches, which means that each team will have seven matches that count in the pool. All ties will be broken with additional matches, using a full packet for a two-way tie or half packets for a tie involving more than two teams. Additionally, if and only if there is a team alone in first place and a team with one fewer win alone in second place, then there will be an advantaged final. All eight teams receive trophies, and the top four teams are PACE Platinum Qualified.

In the bottom afternoon pool, morning results will not carry over. Each team will play five matches, and ties will not be played off.

Standard Division
Matches are 4-on-4. Each match consists of 20/20 with neg penalties, powers, no bonus rebounds, and ties determined by the first point change on a tossup.

There are 42 teams divided into seven pools of six teams each. In the first 5 rounds, each team will play each opponent within their pool. Extra matches will be used to determine pool winners, using a full packet for a two-way tie or half packets for a tie involving more than two teams. Other ties within pools will not be broken.

The pool winners and the top five other teams will be placed in two pools of six in the afternoon. The top five other teams will be the teams with winning records with the highest points per bonus. Ties within those pools for first or second will be played off. The two pool winners will play each other for 1st, and the two pool runners up will play each other for 3rd. Teams not in the two top pools will be ranked by points per bonus and put into pools of six to play five afternoon rounds.

It might be a few days before full stats are posted. In Standard, Latin beat OPRF in the Championship, and Homewood-Flossmoor and Williams were tied for 3rd.

In Über-Competitive, DCC has an advantage over Auburn in the Finals. Northmont took 3rd. Chicago Lab and Hinsdale Central are playing for the right to play Harmony for 4th. IMSA A took 7th and Norman North 8th.

EDIT: Auburn and Hinsdale Central won the first set of tiebreaker matches.

EDIT: Auburn and Hinsdale Central won again.

I want to thank our staff, which did a great job overcoming my shortcomings: David Adkins, Jason Asher, Robert Baker, John Brown, Eugene Bulkin, Alex Damisch, Tom Egan, Mark Elrod, Ryan Fedewa, Brad Fischer, Greg Gauthier, Niranjan Jayanth, Adam Kalinich, Jonathan Kersky, Becca Kobernat, Alec Krueger, Mike Laudermith, Jeeho Lee, Dylan Minarik, Jackson Myers, Greg Peterson, Kasey Pham, Anand Poozhikunnel, Ashok Poozhikunnel, Joe Promisco, Chandruganesh Rasendran, David Riley, Micah Robert, Brad Savage, Karl Schmidt, Steve Server, Jim Stankevitz, Derek VanBriesen, Tyler Vaughan, Andrew Wang, Ben Yang, and Jennie Yang. Additional thanks are due to the DEES editors who allowed us to use the set based on some vague email exchanges between me and Charlie Dees back when he was the editor, and to HSAPQ.

I also want to thank the many students and coaches who came out and demonstrated a huge amount of enthusiasm and sportsmanship when they could have been starting their Winter Break.

I'll add that the future of this tournament is currently in doubt for a few reasons. If somebody else in Illinois is willing to host a large tournament on the same date next year, they have our blessing.

Though of course nobody should comment on specific questions yet on the internet, any other feedback is welcome either here or by email. My scheduling of the Über-Competitive Division turned out to be a little overambitious, and I apologize for that. If I had to do it over again, I would have had the bottom afternoon pool play three matches instead of five. We dodged a bullet by not having any ties in pools for 4th place.
