Joan Pujol Garcia Memorial Tournament at MSU (11/15/14)

Post by Assistant to the Sodajerk's Confidante »

I am pleased to announce Michigan State University's first tournament of the 2014-2015 school year, the Joan Pujol Garcia Memorial Tournament, which will be held on 15 November 2014.

This tournament will be run using Tournament 53 from HSAPQ. As per the usual for HSAPQ sets, questions at this tournament will have tossups and three-part bonuses, and they will be powermarked. There will be no computational math.

Teams will be placed in brackets for the morning, and then re-bracketed in the afternoon to play against teams with similar records from the morning games. Each team should expect to play ten games, but the format may change depending on the final size of the field.

Registration will initially be limited to 24 teams, though the field may well be expanded if interest dictates and staffing allows. Schools will be limited to two teams each, initially. If you would like to register more than two teams, please let us know in your registration email, and those additional teams will be placed on the waitlist.

The tournament will likely be held at Wells Hall, beginning at 9:00 AM. Registration will begin at 8:15. More information on location will be available in the near future.

Tournament fees are as follows:
$70 - first team
$60 - second team from a school and on
-$10 - new to quizbowl (no teams from your school have attended a pyramidal quizbowl tournament in the last two academic years)
-$10 - WORKING buzzer system (if your buzzer system doesn't fully function, please don't bring it)
-$10 - Travel over 100 miles one way, as determined by Google maps
-$10 - Competent staffer (if staff required; let us know if you would like to claim this discount and we will tell you if it is necessary)

We prefer payment by cash or check made out to "MSU Academic Competition Club" on the day of the tournament; if your school requires you to mail payment ahead of the tournament, please contact us and we can give you our mailing address. If you will not be able to pay until after the tournament, please let us know ahead of time.

Please e-mail us at [email protected] to register or if you have any questions. We hope to see you in East Lansing on November 15th.

With requisite amounts of staff, the tournament field has been expanded to 30 teams. So, if you want your team to be involved, now's your chance.

This is probably the coolest guy to ever have a tournament named after him (wikipedia him if you don't know who he is).

Congratulations to Skyline which defeated Grosse Pointe North in a very competitive final.

I'm sure that full stats will be up soon - in the meantime, thanks for all the teams for coming.

Prelim and Combined stats are now available at the database listing: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/2398/. Playoff only stats should be up sometime tomorrow afternoon. Thanks to everyone who came out today, both players and staff, for helping to make things run as smoothly as they did. An inexperienced TD thanks you.
