North Carolina 2012-2013

NC Association for Scholastic Activities expects to set the dates for all Quiz Bowl leagues and tournaments in late June. All middle school meets and tournaments will be held on the same dates and sites as the high school meets and tournaments. Expect the "Spring" weekly after-school meets to begin with a kick-off on a Saturday in late January, with the District Tournaments in four to six sites in March and the State Final in March or April.

NCASA membership grew by 75% this year, and we expect similar growth next year. Already two additional school districts have committed to registering all schools for membership. The total number of schools participating in NCASA Quiz Bowl competitions doubled from 2010-2011.

For those interested in Twelve, tentative dates are November 17 for District, and December 1 for State, but we will attempt to avoid the Maggie Walker December date that drew some NC schools last year. Twelve for middle schools will be based on North Carolina with an emphasis on NC History.

NCASA is also expanding to present a comprehensive scholastic program for middle schools including weekly quiz bowl meets and District and State Tournaments. We continue to partner with NAQT to present quiz bowl in North Carolina.

I will be attending UNC-Chapel Hill in the fall, and aim to get the club much more active and involved, which includes running high school tournaments. I can't speak for the club right now, but it's my goal that UNC would host a spring tournament in addition to Tar Heel Cup.

On a discussion-oriented note, which teams project to be strong in NC this year? I noticed that Enloe, East Chapel Hill, and Early College at Guilford all placed highly this past weekend.

I'm also moving to NC for grad school (Duke), and should in general be available as a freelance moderator for area tournaments. Also hoping to see UNC host some college level stuff since it's so close to Duke.

Can we start claiming dates? Saint Mary's will host the Belles' Bowl VIII on 2 March 2013.

The Early College at Guilford would like to claim October 13, 2012 for Quaker Bowl. (This is a week earlier than previous incarnations because there has been a slight change in our school's schedule). More details will be forthcoming.

Enloe will claim the dates of either Sept 15 or 22nd for a season opener. We will mirror the MSU/UD housewrite set.

EnIAC II will be the Saturday following GSAC. Assuming GSAC is Dec 1, then EnIAC will be Dec 8th. This tournament is be an IS set.

The 2012 NCASA Twelve Competition dates have been set for this year. While we were tempted by 12/12/12, we didn't feel Wednesday was an appropriate date for the State Final. The Twelve District competitions will be held in three to four sites statewide on November 17. The Twelve State Final will be held in Central NC on December 1.

In late June we will set remaining dates for all competitions including the District and State Quiz Bowl Tournaments. Here are the likely dates:
- January 26 - Saturday kick-off for weekly after-school quiz bowl meets. All other weekly meets will be on weekday afternoons. We expect to have weekly after-school quiz bowl meets in Charlotte, Statesville, Triad, and Triangle areas next school year.
- March 9 - District Quiz Bowl Tournaments held throughout NC
- March 23, April 6, and April 13 are all under consideration for the Quiz Bowl State Final. We are working closely with other major academic competitions to do everything possible to keep too many of these competition state final dates from overlapping on each other, allowing students to compete in many of these events.

All NCASA competitions will be open to member high schools and middle schools next year. For more information, visit our website: www.ncscholastic.org.

http://parrcenter.unc.edu/hseb is a bit of an issue for us on the 17th (I guess that UNC may not have any overlap between QB and Ethics Bowl, unlike us).
Would it be at all possible to discuss a date change?

I don't think it's very likely that we'll be able to change the date, although we'll discuss it at our meeting this week. It is likely that we'll host a spring counterpart to Tar Heel Cup, though.

The deadline to register for membership in the NC Association for Scholastic Activities is Wednesday, October 24. Membership grants schools free access to all our competitions, including the Regional and State Quiz Bowl Tournaments. We currently have about 140 member schools, and expect to more than double last year's total of 77 schools. We also expect the State Quiz Bowl Tournament to double in size to roughly 50 schools this year. Like last year, we will also offer weekly after-school quiz bowl meets to interested schools. We expect to form leagues in the following areas:
- Charlotte
- Hickory / Statesville
- Triad
- Triangle
Visit our website to register your school for membership: http://www.ncscholastic.org.

Greetings, All!

I have the pleasure of announcing that Wake Technical Community College will be hosting the 2012-2013 edition of High School Celebrity Shoot Biography Tournament - January 19, 2013 at Wake Tech's North Campus, conveniently located at I-540 exit 18 (Louisburg Rd), Raleigh, NC. This tournament was held at Case Western Reserve and Duke for several years. We have been given permission by the owners to write a new set for this year.

This is a great tournament for new players and new teams. No worries about buzzer systems - no buzzer systems!
Inexpensive tournament - $40 for first team of 4 players, $5 per each additional player. Chimera teams will be made from schools whose total number of players aren't divisible by 4 - everybody plays! Coaches can play for FREE!

Give a post if you are interested in bringing teams or helping out.

Registration is now open for NCASA's weekly quiz bowl meets. Interested member schools will be grouped into conferences. Each meet will consist of one school hosting two to three other schools in their conference, with each school playing each other school one time. Results from these weekly meets will be used to seed teams in the Regional Tournaments which are qualifiers for the State Tournament. These meets will kick-off on Saturday, January 26 at one school in each conference. All other meets will be after school. The season will last six weeks.

These meets are open to all NCASA middle and high schools. We expect to form conferences in the following areas:
- Greater Charlotte, including Statesville / Hickory
- Triad
- Raleigh /Durham
- Northeast NC
- Sampson County

Additional conferences will be formed as demand exists. NAQT A packets will be used for these meets. These meets and all other NCASA competitions are available at no additional charge to NCASA member schools. Visit our website for membership information and to register: www.ncscholastic.org. NCASA currently has 132 member schools. About half of these are expected to participate in quiz bowl.

This is the formal announcement for the Right Triangle Open
We’d like to invite you to Raleigh Charter High School for the 9th Annual Right Triangle Open on Saturday, February 23, 2013. This is a high school Quiz Bowl tournament that will take place from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, though we may finish earlier. The tournament is open to any high school team that wishes to attend.

Format: We will play 6 preliminary and 3 playoff rounds; every team is guaranteed at least 6 rounds. All rounds will be played according to NAQT procedures, with 20 pyramid-style tossups and corresponding bonuses. We will play powers and negs, but there will be no bouncebacks on bonuses. As in years’ past, games will be Swiss-paired throughout the day using our automated scoring program. Trophies will be awarded to the two top teams and book prizes for the top ten individual scorers.

Registration: To register, please e-mail Betsy Newmark at betsynewmark AT gmail DOT com with the number of teams and buzzers you wish to bring, and an e-mail address where we may reliably contact you. Soon after, you should receive a confirmation email along with a packet of information regarding the tournament.

Fees: The fee per team will be $65, with a $10 discount for each fully functional buzzer system that has a control box and eight buzzers. Payment may be mailed either prior to October 27, or paid in person on the day of the tournament. Please make all checks out to Raleigh Charter High School.

Teams: There may be a maximum of six players on one team's roster, up to four of whom may play at one time, with no exceptions. If you bring more than six players, you must register a second team to have all of them play. There is a half-time substitution opportunity in each game. Each player may appear on only one team's roster throughout the day—no switching between the A and B teams, for example. Teams may also play shorthanded with fewer players.

Food: Neither breakfast nor lunch will be provided by the tournament. Further information regarding local food options will be provided along with the confirmation email sent to you after registration.

We hope to see your team at the RTO!
