National History Bee Nationals - Format of Final Rounds

Post by Great Bustard »

The following is the official format of the National History Bee National Championship Final Rounds, which will be held at Mount Vernon, VA on the afternoon of Sunday, April 29.

1. JV eligible players playing Varsity
This only applies to a tiny handful of players, but 9th and 10th graders who qualified in a Varsity Bee Regional Final are eligible to play Varsity History Bee at Nationals. If they finish in the top 20, they will then compete at Mount Vernon in both the Varsity and JV finals. The 10th place JV finisher would then not have the opportunity to compete at Mount Vernon. However, if such players finish in 21st place or lower in the Varsity prelims, they will under no circumstances be among the 10 JV finalists who play in the JV finals at Mount Vernon.
The rationale for this is that we firmly believe that the 20th place Varsity student is more likely than not to be a stronger player than the 10th place JV student. We wish to avoid a situation where we have a JV champion - but they didn't then compete against a student who made Varsity finals as a 9th or 10th grader. The JV Bee winner at Nationals should be the top 10th or 9th grade history bee player in the country, regardless of their decision to play Varsity or not. This rule ensures this will be the case.

2. Format for JV Finals at Mount Vernon
The top 10 players will play a round of 10. The first 5 students to get 4 tossups correct advance to the next stage.
The 5 remaining players will play a round of 5. The first 2 students to get 6 tossups correct advance to the final stage.
The final stage will take place after the two Varsity prelim rounds, but before the Varsity finals.
In the final stage, the first student to get 10 tossups correct will win the National Championship.

3. Format for Varsity Finals at Mount Vernon
The top 20 players will make the Varsity Finals at Mount Vernon. Upon arrival, they will be divided into 2 groups of 10 based on prelim round point total. The one group will include seeds 1, 4, 5, 8, 9, 12, 13, 16, 17, and 20. The other group will include seeds 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11, 14, 15, 18, and 19. Ties will be broken first by highest single round score in a Bee prelim round at Nationals; failing that, we will use sudden death tossups to determine seeds.
The two groups will simultaneously play a round of 10. The first 5 students to get 4 tossups correct advance to the next stage.
For the next stage, students remain in the rooms they played in for the round of 10; there is no rebracketing.
The two groups will simultaneously play a round of 5. The first 2 students to get 6 tossups correct advance to the four-student final.
In the final stage, the two top students from each group will play together in a group of four. The first student to get 10 tossups correct is the National Champion and will win the trip to France to compete at the European Championships. For placement purposes, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place will be determined by how many points they have at the point the winning student reaches 10. If students are tied, no further determination will be used (i.e. it is possible three students will tie for second).

We anticipate that 210 tossup questions will suffice; plus we plan on having a leftover Bowl emergency packet if it really comes to it.
