Virginia Tech will be hosting its first (at least in a long time) Spring Invitational tournament on Saturday, April 21, 2012. This tournament will be run using NAQT IS-112A, and held on the Virginia Tech central campus in Blacksburg, Virginia.

LOCATION, DIRECTIONS, PARKING: The tournament will take place at Virginia Tech's main campus in Blacksburg, Virginia. From I-81, take Exit 118B to US 460 West, and take the Prices Fork Rd exit towards downtown. Parking is unrestricted on the weekends, and is generally most available in the parking garage accessible from Prices Fork, in lots along Stanger Street, which is the first right turn from Prices Fork after the parking garage, and along the Drillfield, which is accessible from Stanger Street. A complete campus map is available here.

QUESTIONS: This tournament will be run using NAQT set IS-112A.

FORMAT: This tournament will use the traditional tossup/bonus format, using untimed rounds. A round will consist of 20 tossups with correct tossup answers earning a team a bonus in which it can earn up to 30 additional points, using broken into three questions each worth 10 points. Teams will be seeded to preliminary groupings before being reseeded based on record. All teams will be offered a minimum of 8 games. Trophies and prizes will be awarded to the top teams and individual players.

REGISTRATION AND FEES:
-The fee structure is as follows:
Base fee: $70 for the first team from a school, and $65 for each additional team. There is no limit to the number of teams who can attend from one school.
Buzzer discount: $5 off school's total fee for each fully functional system (control box and eight activators all work)-no limit to # of systems you can bring
Staff discount: $5 off school's total fee. This could be a coach, parent, student who is not playing, etc. Team-provided staffers will keep score for various games not involving the team with which they are affiliated. Volunteer staffers must stay through all the games (except finals) in order to receive credit for their school. There is no limit to the number of staffers you can bring.
Travel: $5 off the school's fee for travel in excess of 200 one-way miles traveled between your school's address and Virginia Tech according to Google Maps.
Minimum fee: The minimum fee is $0 (you can bring enough buzzers and staffers to eliminate your entire fee via discounts, but you cannot have a "negative fee.")

-To register, e- mail me at [email protected] with the number of teams, buzzers, and staffers you want to bring, and an email address where you can be contacted with details. We are also requiring a cell phone contact number belonging to someone who will be attending the tournament, so that we can track you down if you are running late. Feel free to share this announcement with any schools that you think would be interested in attending. There is no further registration form or other action needed on your part in order to be officially registered; you only need to e-mail me at that address with the information requested. Posts made in this thread will not be considered official registrations; you must e-mail me.

METHOD OF PAYMENT: All teams must pay by the day of the tournament. We prefer to accept payment in person right before the tournament starts, but we will accept checks by mail ahead of time if your procedures require it.
We can accept cash, personal checks, or checks from school, school district, or quizbowl club funds. We have no ability to process purchase orders, credit cards, Paypal, or any other forms of payment. We will contact registered teams with instructions to whom to make the checks out.

TEAM & ROSTER SIZE: There may be a maximum of six players on one team's roster, up to four of whom may play at one time. There will be no exceptions to this rule. If you bring more than six players, you must register a second team to have all of them play. There is a halftime substitution opportunity in each game. Each player may appear on only one team's roster throughout the day-no switching from the B team to the A team, etc. Teams may also play shorthanded.

FOOD: Neither breakfast nor lunch will be provided by the tournament. We will provide a list of suggested eateries for the lunch break.

Just a reminder that we've still got plenty of room for interested teams.

At this point, we've got 16 teams registered, and we're going to have to cap the field until we can procure some additional staff. We may be willing to add additional teams to the field if they can provide staff, but otherwise all new registrations will be added to the waitlist for the time being.

I sent an email to all of my team contacts yesterday evening. If you did not receive this, please let me know.

The highlights:

We're going to be meeting in McBryde 113 at 8:30 for registration.

This weekend is our football program's spring game, along with several other events. Parking is generally unrestricted (with some exceptions), but it is suggested to park in either the lot in front of the Surge Space Science building, or in the parking garage or surface lots along Perry Street.

With 16 teams, we'll split into brackets of 8 and play a bracketed round robin. The top 2 teams will play crossover games against the top 2 from the other bracket, following by the second 2, third 2, and last 2; the game against the other team in your bracket will also carry over, and we'll decide first, second, and third places.

With one round to go in the playoffs, both Christiansburg and Cave Spring are undefeated and are playing the first game of what is essentially a best-of-three series for the championship.

12 teams showed up today; Daniel Boone had to drop in the days prior to the tournament, and Christiansburg agreed to consolidate to one team for scheduling purposes.

Christiansburg defeated Cave Spring A in the third game of the advantaged playoff to take the title.

Radford won the first game of an advantaged playoff over Schrodinger's Academy to claim 3rd place.

All the stats are available at our tournament DB entry.
