DCC Novice Tournament (MHSNT Mirror) 10/22/11

Academic Team Coaches:

It is my pleasure to announce the Detroit Catholic Central Novice Academic Tournament which will be held Saturday October 22nd at Detroit Catholic Central High School’s campus at 27225 Wixom Road, Novi, MI 48374. The tournament is open to all ninth, tenth and eleventh grade students with no previous varsity level tournament experience. Teams will consist of four students with any number of eligible substitutions.

Snacks, coffee and juice will be provided to all teams free of charge during registration. For lunch teams are on their own; however, there are many nearby fast-food options available on Grand River Ave or Wixom Road. Maps for lunch options will be provided to schools on the day of the tournament.

The questions are intended for novice players with no more than two years of quiz bowl experience. The tournament will be written by members of the University of Minnesota Academic Team, and the tournament will be mirrored in Minnesota, Arkansas, Georgia, and Illinois. Every team will play six or seven matches in the morning session. There will be a single-elimination playoff round in the afternoon. Trophies will be given to the top two teams. Tournament matches will consist of two halves of toss-up bonus questions.

All questions will be read during the matches. Substitutions will be allowed between rounds and during either team’s time out.

The fee structure is as follows:
• $50 cost per team
• $5 discount per buzzer system
• $10 travel discount for teams traveling 100 mile or more for the tournament (one way).

Regisistration will be held from 8:00 AM until 8:30 AM with the first rounds starting at 8:30 AM. We plan to have the tournament finished by 3:30 PM provided there are no tie breaker matches.

Clearly, we would like at least one more team to make the bracketing easier.
