Team Minnesota has registered for the NASAT, putting the field at 13 teams.

We are still accepting registrations, though the earlier they're received, the better.

Here's an information email I just sent out.
Hello everyone,

Thank you very much for attending the 2012 HSAPQ NASAT! We are very happy to be hosting your teams this year and are glad that you could make the trip. Apologies for the slight delay in sending this out.

This email is intended to provide you the necessary information for this coming weekend’s tournament. If you should need additional information, let me know and I will respond as soon as I can.

First of all, here is a map of Dreese Labs’ location on The Ohio State University’s campus: http://www.osu.edu/map/building.php?building=279 . The Central Classrooms Building is found at http://www.osu.edu/map/building.php?building=072 .

On Saturday, our opening meeting will be held in Dreese Labs in room 0113 at 8 a.m. Registration will occur outside of that room from 7:30 to 8 a.m. It is important that your team arrive on time; if your team does not arrive by the start of the first round, play will continue without them.

Matches will take place in the Central Classrooms Building’s second floor - we will announce the rooms on the day of the tournament. Matches will start no later than 9 a.m. on Saturday and continue until 5:30 p.m. Lunch will take place after round 5 on this day.

Matches will start again at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday. No opening meeting will be held, so just report to the appropriate game room in the Central Classrooms Building at that time.

We are currently planning on having a full round robin between all 13 teams. After this, teams will be split into brackets of 4, 3, 3, and 3 teams to determine final placement. If there is a less than 2 game difference between the top two teams, a best of three games final will be held, with an advantage as necessary. Of course, if the number of teams changes between now and the tournament, the schedule will be affected as well.

We will hold the award ceremony and the finals in Dreese Labs’ room 0113 on Sunday. We encourage everyone to attend this ceremony. We expect matches to be over no later than 12:30 p.m. on Sunday

This tournament will be following the official ACF Rules. They can be found at http://acf-quizbowl.com/documents/official-acf-rules/

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact me via email. I will also supply my phone number in an email sent out on Thursday.

Thanks again for attending the 2012 NASAT!

Regards,

Fred Morlan

I think I've sent this to all the staffers, but just in case I missed anyone (and sorry if I did!) - staffers need to be at Dreese Labs room 0113 between 7:30 and 8 a.m. for registration.

This means completely, not just intra-bracket, correct? i.e. California is 11-1, New York is 10-2, we're 9-3, and Georgia is 8-4 as opposed to California being 2-1, New York being 1-2, is being 1-2, and Georgia being 2-1?

Congratulations to Team California for winning the 2012 HSAPQ NASAT! They cleared the field by 3 games to clinch the title, making a final unnecessary.

Team New York and Team Illinois are currently tied for 2nd; that tie will be played off. Team Georgia is 4th.

Stats should be fully updated for all non-tiebreaker matches.

I think it's interesting to note the relative parity of quizbowl across the country now, as opposed to before. This has been brought up a couple of times this year, but it's shown most clearly by these results. None of the states represented in the top two brackets of this tournament were represented by a single school that had won a high school national title before this year.

What is the future of NASAT? Are the organizers of this tournament content with just 13 states being represented? What can be done to increase participation?

I second Andrew, but I also wonder--where were states (with active circuits) such as Michigan, Florida, South Carolina, Maryland, etc. Is it economics?

After seeing the resutls of the NAQT nationals in Atlanta and PACE Nationals in St. Louis, I would have to say that I found these results fairly predictable.

To my mind, one of the problems is the definition of what makes an "All-Star" player, as defined by NASAT. From a quick look at the players across seveal states, you have everything from graduated seniors going to Harvard and Stanford, all the way down to middle school students. That seems like an awfully big range to me if it's going to fit into the 'All-Star" category. This is conjoined with the issue of what is one state's all-star may well not be another state's all-star. Who decides? 50 different state coordinators? Hmmmmm.

Another issue is finances. Coming at the very end of a QB season, choices have to be made. With 13 teams, I suspect that finances were an issue.

Hmmmmm.
This seems like a non-issue. Each state's top pyramidal quizbowl players tend to be in the loop about things such as NASAT. States will (ideally) send the top four players that are willing to go, whether those people are Ivy-bound seniors or promising underclassmen. It's certainly true that "one state's all-star may well not be another state's all-star", but as long as states are using reasonable methods to select participants, this tournament will make sense as it stands. The range of participation in this tournament is no different from that of any other national tournament, and as more schools become aware of NASAT, any disparity will naturally decrease. The idea of state coordinators is certainly a good one, but it's worth pointing out that the impromptu NASAT tryouts that some colleges have held accomplish this task well.

I was very impressed with all of the teams I saw at NASAT. I hope next year's field will be larger and I think it will be, although the age old problems of finances and scheduling seem to be consistent problems. There were a couple first time states this year, so hopefully that sets up a foundation. I think a little bit of continuity will help boost attendance.

I think that the varying definitions of what an All-Star is from state to state can produce some interesting results though, and is part of the fun of the tournament. Take the top 4 teams here, for instance - California and New York are teams that are based around players who won national titles this year, with some help from another local, Georgia is a team where a very strong one man team plus 4 other players who are all very good in their own right on other local teams banded together to try and fill in the gaps, and Illinois is made up of four players who tried out and proved themselves to all be roughly equally excellent and able to perform highly at different categories to create a well rounded team. In 2010, a team entirely composed of State College players won, and in 2011 a true all-star team of excellent players from a few different teams in Texas won. These are all different strategies that can work in their own different way, and the excellent parity in this field from top to bottom showed that. In terms of teams that showed up to Panasonic, that was much the same when it ran - there were some true all-stars, some single school teams, some very slightly mixed teams, and who knows what else who would show up to compete, so this is always how it's been done. To me, that's part of the excitement of this kind of tournament - which strategy will pay off in any given year?

In the case of Michigan, we fully planned on coming, but my team mates didn't have the money to pay for it. If facebook is correct, the kids from Maryland just didn't want to.

Money is of course the biggest issue. I for one don't know how kids/teams have money to attend three nationals in a span of four weeks, when going to one pretty much breaks our bank. Not that a team from Delaware would have expected to play well at all here, though. But i'm not ruling it out in the future entirely, i just don't really see how it's possible.
