Not exactly negs, but humerous. From the New Trier Schobo Solo, which proves even among some great players, not all are experts in everything:
Spell the adjective beginning with the letter "V" that refers to instinctive feelings. A synonym of "inner", it means "felt deep down".
<BUZZ>: V-E-N-E-R-E-A-L (correct: V-I-S-C-E-R-A-L)
What contains big holes on each side called obturator foramen? This combination of fused bones holds the sacrum and coccyx.
<BUZZ>: rectum (correct: pelvis)
Which theorem states that over a continuous closed interval and analogous differentiable open interval there is at least one point in that interval such that the derivative at that point is equal to the average slope over the entire interval? It is abbreviated MVT.
<BUZZ>: Slope-Tangent Theorem (correct: Mean Value Theorem)
Some variations include dioxane and THF, and a monument to it can be found in Boston. First used in 1841, for a time it played a major role in medicine, but it is no longer used because it is an irritant to some patients, and can be dangerous. Name this anesthetic.
<BUZZ>: Penicilin (correct: diethyl ether)

George Washington for Dwight Eisenhower -
We here at Eisenhower HS pride ourselves on our uncanny ability to always miss questions where the answer is "Eisenhower".
I bet if one of the questions was "What school do you go to?", someone would buzz in and say MacArthur, or William Jennings Bryan, or something like that.
Must be a curse...

And I remember some years back, one of the Paul Lawrence Dunbar teams missed a question about, yep you guessed it, Paul Lawrence Dunbar. =D It happens.

Don't worry, I missed a question on a MacArthur quote in high school (Loyola JV freshman year), the weird part is that we were playing Von Steuben and a Von Steuben quote came up in the exact same bonus. I think Riley planned that...airmale007 wrote:George Washington for Dwight Eisenhower -

Not in Mortal Kombat!
(And PS, I'm pretty sure I or someone I played with made the exact opposite neg -- the MK guy for the Man in Black)
(PPS--I win, DumbJaques!)

I did that, except it was a guess after the question ended. Carlo (rightfully) got mad at me.styxman wrote:TU: ...(don't remember the exact wording, but it's a music tossup talking ambigiously about the ending to his final work)...until his death in 1945. Answer: Liszt (on a reflex buzz)
Correct: Bartok (it finishes "word for 'the end' on his final work")

The only way you could be rightfully mad about it if it came after the TU is if it came RIGHT after the end of the TU. It's not that bad if he doesn't buzz in with Bartok before you if you give him enough time.Trevkeeper wrote:I did that, except it was a guess after the question ended. On a random note, is it ethical to ask a tournament director for placing a certain team with you in the morning pool for a tournament?

I only got mad at him because he should have known I was likely to know the answer (I thought of it just as he buzzed), and he buzzed in (with only a guess) immediately after the tossup ended -- AND the other team was already locked out. Had he given me a few seconds, I would have blamed only myself. We won the match anyway, though.styxman wrote:The only way you could be rightfully mad about it if it came after the TU is if it came RIGHT after the end of the TU. But to keep this on topic, I will nominate the other team's earlier buzz as a bad neg. (Sorry I don't remember much of it.)

I also made the Liszt-for-Bartok mistake.
Also from the Sterling kickoff:
"Although he served as governor of Ohio, he is better known for his later political career..."
Buzz: "Jerry Springer"
The question went on to say that he went on to become president in a controversial election race against Samuel Tilden, blah blah, during which my team, responsible for the neg, sat and hated that player while the other team let the question die.

At the fall Vanderbilt tournament-
Moderator: Name these generals from their nicknames: "The Swamp Fox."
Me: *turns to the other SS major on my team* "Marion Anderson, right?"
Now I've been doing this all day, where I'll say something that I know is right and just cursorily verify to my teammates that I'm not about to say something stupid. However, this time, it just passes us by....
Her: *nods*
Me: "Marion Anderson"
Moderator: "I'm sorry that's incorrect."
Me: *stares blankly while the other team says, "Francis Marion."*
Me: *lowers head in shame*

Hmm, my first thought was Webern upon seeing that, but something tells me they were aiming for Bartok instead.leapfrog314 wrote:

Came up in our match against Athens.
I nailed it after they guessed "Grover Cleveland."
I guess I can understand; Ohio = Cleveland, though in a different way...

Playing an old (1997 NAQT college SCT) packet, lead-in of " 'We Report, You Decide' --" [BUZZ] "Umm..." (thinks it can't possibly just be FOX News) "Al Franken?"
It was in fact FOX News, and I felt stupid.

If it was Al Franken, the lead in would probably be "Fair and Balanced", and the question set would be newer.jonpin wrote:Playing an old (1997 NAQT college SCT) packet, lead-in of " 'We Report, You Decide' --" [BUZZ] "Umm..." (thinks it can't possibly just be FOX News) "Al Franken?"
