The Vermont-NEA Scholars' Bowl will be running the 13th annual Sue Pasco Opening Tournament at Essex High School in Essex Junction, Vt., on Saturday, Sept. 24.

This is our annual kickoff tournament -- a semi-formal event, featuring candy prizes and primarily intending to serve as an introduction to the season for Vermont teams. However, will be gladly welcome any schools from outside the state interested in joining us.

We hold this tournament in conjunction with our league coaches meeting, and the format is dependent on the number of readers available. If we get enough volunteers, we will start during the meeting and play 8-10 matches about 20 minutes in length. If not, we hold some kind of collective competition during the meeting and likely run eight shorter matches once the meeting ends and the coaches can help moderate games.

This tournament will serve as an NAQT HSNCT qualifier, but to keep costs to a minimum, we're using IS-101A, a set from last season. Any school that has purchased or played on that set is ineligible to participate.

The tournament is free for all members of the Vermont Scholars' Bowl. We ask any out-of-state schools to pay $5 per team to help defray our question costs. The registration deadline is Sept. 20.

If your interested in registering or have any other questions, contact me, Kevin Commo, at [email protected].

School's planning to attend as of 9/18:
South Burlington 5-6 teams
Hanover 3
Fair Haven 2-3
Essex 2
Burlington 2
CVU 1-2
BFA-Fairfax 1-2
Lamoille 1
Middlebury 1
St. Johnsbury 1
Thetford 1
Total 20-22 teams

It should also be pointed out this tournament has been certified as a PACE gold event so the top 20 percent of the field should qualify for NSC.

And while I'm at it, if anyone following this board is in Northern New England and looking for something to do on Saturday, we could definitely use help on the reader side. If you're interested, email me at [email protected].

How'd this go? Curious to see who's strong up north this year.

^^ Agreed. I'm interested to see that for the "Quest" coming up in a little over a month.

After several late dropouts and additions, we ended up with a field of 23 teams from 10 schools.

South Burlington went undefeated A won the title, but only after edging otherwise unbeaten Hanover, 445-420, in one of the highest-quality matches we've seen in Vermont. Both of those teams have the bulk of their lineups back from last year's teams at NCT and they definitely look like the local teams to beat.

Champlain Valley A pushed Hanover to the wire in finishing third and also qualifies for NAQT and PACE nationals along with fourth-place Burlington and fifth-place Fair Haven. Fair Haven gets the extra spots based on NAQT's small-school rules and our PACE gold status.

We did not keep much in the way of stats for this tournament, but all the match results can be found at http://www.scholarsbowl.org/pasco11_standings.html.

Finally, I'd be remiss if I didn't thank all the volunteers for their help with reading and/or keeping score. We had a great turnout today and it allowed us to run a successful tournament despite not having coaches available to help with matches for the early part of the day because of an important league meeting.
