8/28/2010 DAR High School Back to School Tournament

Post by Matthew D »

I know it is a bit early but I wanted to let everyone know to save August 28th, 2010 for our 2nd annual season opening tournament. This will be a NAQT tournament with an IS set that will be set later.
Hope to see as many teams as we can for our tournament in Grant, AL.
edited to include fees
registration set to begin at 8:30 am and play being promptly at 9 am.
Base registration fee for the tournament will be 60 dollars for the first team (then 55 for any team after the first)
with a discount of $5 for working buzzers
$5 off for each team after the first team
$10 dollars off for teams that travel 200 miles or more.

Dear Coaches,

I am pleased to announce the 3rd Annual DAR High School Kickoff Invitational will be held on August 28th, 2010 with registration set to begin at 8:30 am and play being promptly at 9 am. Base registration fee for the tournament will be 60 dollars with a discount of $5 for working buzzers, $5 for each team after the first team, and $10 dollars off for teams that travel 200 miles or more. To register please fill out the following form located at http://tinyurl.com/27j4ytk
The DAR Invitational will be a NAQT (National Academic Quiz Tournaments) national qualification event using NAQT IS-96 set of questions. All rules for official NAQT tournaments will be followed except each individual match will not be timed. Full rules can be found at http://www.naqt.com/rules.html . There will be trophies given for the top three teams in each division and awards for the top 3 individual high scores for the tournament in both the varsity and junior varsity divisions. We will only have a junior varsity division if we have more than 5 teams in the division.
Playoff qualification will be given out at the coach's meeting prior to the start of the playoff but junior varsity teams will be included in the playoff to allow them to qualify for the play at both the NAQT National Championship tournament later this year in Atlanta, GA. You will be allowed to substitute between matches and at half-time of each match. If you have question or need directions, please call me or email me.
Lunch will be on campus and I will send out information about lunch before the tournament.

Thank you and hope to see you at DAR on the 28th of August!

Sincerely

Matthew Dennis

Well it is about 5 weeks till the tournament and I have decided to attempt to do as much of this paperless as possible so here is the link to the registration form
http://tinyurl.com/27j4ytk
If any teams from TN, GA, FL, or MS are considering coming please let me know and I will attempt to find you a good place to stay locally, about 20 minutes away by car and give you a list of some of the better places to eat in the area for Friday night. Also, I will be giving discounts for teams traveling a good distance, 200 miles and beyond.

If you are considering please fill out the form above as completely as possible and I will get back with you about other items like lunch on tournament day as the tournament gets closer.
Thanks
Matt

Matt,

We might be interested in coming to your tournament even though it is after our first week of school. Do you know what IS set you are using yet? That info could really help me as I start to build our schedule for the fall. Thanks!

Hey, Matt. We're having our first practice on Monday. I should be able to tell you soon thereafter how many teams we will be bringing. There has been a good bit of interest, so we might have 2 teams. I doubt we'll have more than that, though. Also, will you be giving a JV award? I think my whole team may be 9th and 10th graders....

Matt,

Thank you for hosting the tournament, especially so early in the year. It was great to play on an IS set with NAQT rules (except for clocks) in August! I just wish we had been able to stay longer to play out the remaining round(s), but we had to leave because of the time.

And, of course, congratulations to Ezell Harding for their Championship. They deserved it after playing a stunning round in the "finals", powering 7 of their 10 tossups - quite an impressive display of quizbowl knowledge!

Thanks for a good one. Our pool was brutal - Top 3 finishers were in our pool. Although my varsity team didn't manage a win, they left with their heads held high. They left determined instead of despondent. I'm proud of them for that. Our JV team won a couple and left excited about beginning their quiz bowl careers. Not bad for a team that has only every had six practices. It was a great start to our program at Columbia High. I'm proud of the kids' attitude and dedication.

Thanks again.

Man, you guys play a tournament in August and i can't even find one within 3-4 hours of here in all of September yet.

Disregard the things people say about Southeast quizbowl, i wish we could get off to an early start like this every year.

In Missouri, the MSHSAA explicitly bans all participation in high school quizbowl until partway through October.

Very much so. You have no idea how much I would prefer Missouri had Alabama's setup.
