PACE Revokes Matt Knupp's Cooper Award

Post by millionwaves » Wed Feb 25, 2009 11:46 pm

The Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence expresses its great disappointment regarding the actions of Matt Knupp at the Region 16 Governor’s Cup competition at Boyd County High School on the weekend of February 20-21. According to an investigation by the Kentucky Association for Academic Competition, Mr. Knupp was found to have abused tournament procedures in order to gain an unfair advantage in the Governor’s Cup competition for his team. The KAAC has placed a lifetime ban on Mr. Knupp’s participation on any events associated with the Governor’s Cup.

The Cooper Award committee conferred upon Mr. Knupp the 2008 Benjamin Cooper Academic Ambassador Award which he accepted at the 2008 National Scholastics Championship. This commendation is presented to a high school academic competition team member, advisor, or organization whose character best promotes the spirit and honor of quiz bowl competition. The actions that Mr. Knupp decided to take on February 20-21 contradict the spirit and honor of competition that we reward and expect from the award’s recipients.

In solidarity with the actions taken by the KAAC, the Partnership for Academic Excellence hereby revokes the recognition of Mr. Knupp as our 2008 Benjamin Cooper Academic Ambassador. We immediately consider him permanently ineligible for future consideration for reinstatement of this award or for future awards. Furthermore, we reserve the right to bar him from attendance or further participation in PACE-organized tournaments, including the National Scholastics Championship.
