Chicago Open Trash 2016 (July 24, 2016)

Post by theMoMA »

This is a very preliminary (EDIT: now not-so-preliminary) announcement for the triumphant return of CO Trash in 2016, to be written by Rob Carson, Carsten Gehring, and me. It's a ways out, but it's never too early to think of trash. David Seal has officially passed the torch to us, contingent on a formal torch-passing ceremony and certain considerations regarding the tournament's editorial stance toward Randy Wittman.

We will likely follow (perhaps a bit loosely) David's distribution from the most recent iteration of this tournament (EDIT: we will follow this distribution):

4/4 Sports: 1/1 football; 1/1 baseball; 1/1 basketball; 1/1 other
4/4 Film: 1/1 pre-1980s; 2/1 or 1/2 1980s and 90s; 2/1 or 1/2 2000s with a mix of genres
4/4 TV: .5/.5 pre-1990; 1/1 1990s; 2.5/2.5 2000 or later with a mix of genres
4/4 Music: 1/1 rock; 1/1 pop; 1/1 rap, R&B, soul; 1/1 other or more of big three with a mix of times
1.5/1.5 video games
1/1 comics/trash lit
1.5/1.5 other

These things will also probably be true: there will be around 12 packets, questions will be of reasonable length, and the difficulty will be in line with past CO trash tournaments. (EDIT: see below for format discussion.)

All teams are welcome, though the staff and room situation may place practical limits on the number. Our hope is to be the main event on CO Sunday, but we'll work closely with other side event organizers to plan a reasonable schedule. (EDIT: see below for format/field cap.)

I'll eventually supplement this post with information on cost, mirrors, field cap, a funny name for the tournament, and various other things.

Cost

The entry fee will be $140 a team; to encourage four-person teams, there is no shorthanded discount. The buzzer discount is $10 per functional buzzer, which we reserve the right to limit to three per team if there's a glut of buzzers. Buzzers that aren't functional (i.e. don't allow for four-on-four gameplay) are not eligible for a discount; do not bring them.

Field cap

We have 12 game rooms available, so the field will be capped at an expedient number between 16 and 24, inclusive, depending on demand and staffer/buzzer availability.

Staffing

If you're interested in staffing, please post in the thread.

Registration

Please register by emailing both Rob and me ([email protected] and [email protected]). Teams with at least one staffer/player/editor of CO proper will receive priority registration by registering before May 15, after which registration will be purely first come, first served. Please try to have your full four-person roster before registering.

Free agents and field

Here is a team spreadsheet listing free agent and field. Free agents can also post in the thread. Editing this spreadsheet will NOT register your team; you have to email Rob and me for that (see above).

Format

There will be at least 12 packets, and at least 10 rounds, ideally with zero byes (though this will depend on staffers/field size). Exact format will depend on field size.

Editorial stance toward Randy Wittman

The editors of this tournament hereby denounce the NBA coaching of Randy Wittman, and commend the Washington Wizards for their decision to move on from his substandard tactics and leadership.

Logistics and payment

The tournament will take place at Cobb Lecture Hall. Registration will close at 8:45 on Sunday, July 24. Teams must pay upon registration by check, cash, or Venmo; bring your $$$!

Our FUTURE team currently consists of myself and Tejas Raje. Mrs. Gupta is on the waitlist to be on the team, but perhaps others might like to join.

Brian McNamara has joined our team. We'd I guess like someone who actually knows music now as the 4th.

I have very little stake in this, but will there then be no trash nowheres nohows at CO 2015? That's...disappointing, to say the least.

All three of the CO side events have been announced for ages. There's no way CO Sunday can have another event.

Damn, are we for real signing up in this thread already? I'll play if I'm still alive and could be interested in being a free agent. I'm good at stuff about the 70s and 80s, as I was alive, and decent at movies and rock/indie music in general.

Well, I have no idea what I'll be doing in 15 months, but if I'm in Chicago, I guess I'll be doing this. Hoping to keep my streak of third-place finishes alive at this event, or at the very least, to play with some peeps I kinda know but have never been on a team with.

People are free to band together for this tournament whenever, of course, but I probably won't start getting field updates together for several months. Let's say we'll start accepting registrations when the clock rolls over to 2016. Feel free to continue posting in this thread to form teams and whatever.

With the announcement of CO weekend comes the announcement of this tournament's actual date. We may (may) offer the set for some mirrors after CO weekend, but obviously (as with CO itself) the goal of drawing a big competitive field to the main site remains paramount.

Officially will be in Chicago for this, so looking for teammates. Personal strengths include:

Knowing that sports are liked by many people and may come up in questions.
Knowing how a television operates and how to watch it frequently enough to recognize shows that might appear in questions.
Knowing that movies are of cultural importance and even watching them on DVD, which I also know how to operate.
Knowing that the little triangle pointing to the right on my mac keyboard means "play music now," enabling me to listen to popular music
Knowing how to read well enough to have heard of trash lit and having the manual dexterity needed to play some video games.

I will be coming with a teammate who also has the above skills, but to a lesser extent. Please let us join your team.

I'm a free agent for this. I'm pretty good at stereotypically "John Lawrence" categories, and at some entirely random things that you would not expect me to know about, none of which includes sports or contemporary pop music, however.

The girl (Mackenzie, nearing 15 now) is, alas, not going to come along, though she did play in her first tournament back in December, a mirror of BUTT during which she got two toss-ups (don't know if that's open for discussion, so I won't say, but I was ever so proud).

However, I can now announce that I will be teaming up with Billy Beyer, and Eric and Bryn Douglass. I reckon teams can sit on those anime and video game questions when playing us . . . .

Here is the team formation spreadsheet. I've pre-populated it with information from this thread; please indicate your free agency, tentatively-formed teams, and/or interest in staffing there.

Note that it is not the sign-up sheet; to officially register a team please email both Andrew and I! Either room or staff availability will eventually necessitate a field cap, which we will endeavor to determine as soon as possible.

EDIT: on that note, volunteers to staff will be greatly appreciated!

DOUBLE EDIT: For the time being, the field cap is 16 teams; we'll see how things go from there.

Further info:

Team registration.

For now, the field is capped at 16. Once you've got your four-player roster, you can register at any time by (as Rob said above) emailing both Rob and me ([email protected] and [email protected]). We'll consider changing the field size based on demand, staffer or room availability, and other relevant factors.

We want to give teams that are playing, staffing, or editing CO proper preference in registration, and the way we're going to do that is this: if you submit your registration between now and May 15, and at least 1/4 of your team is composed of people playing or staffing CO proper (I'll call these "CO-proper teams"), you'll be slotted into the field based on when you register. Teams made up entirely of non-CO players/staffers (I'll call these "non-CO-proper teams") will be slotted based on registration date after all the CO player/staffer teams. So, for instance, if there are ten "CO-proper teams" registered on May 15, the first "non-CO-proper team" would get slot #11 in the field, and the seventh "non-CO-proper" team would be the first on the waitlist. If the field isn't full on May 15, remaining registrations will be first come, first served, and we may limit them to achieve a useful field size.

EDIT: also, it'd be great if you put in your registration email whether or not at least one of you/your teammates are playing/staffing CO proper.

Staffer registration.

Please post in the thread and/or email Rob and me if you're available to staff. Staffers will get lunch (or money for lunch), soda and cough drops and candy, the chance to see packets that presumably score very well on Carsten's readability scale, and our sincere and undying gratitude. (Seriously, we can't run this tournament without at least three more staffers, so please join your heroic peers Auroni and Will and help us out if you can!)

I'm planning on playing this tournament and looking for a team. My strengths are solely limited to Sara Bareilles, Happy Endings and Cougar Nights in Faded Moonlight.

After careful consideration and consultation with industry experts, we've decided to lower the priority registration threshold to 1/4 teammates. If at least one of you is playing or staffing CO proper, make sure to note that in your registration email. I've edited my post above to reflect this. We've received five registrations to date.

You are, of course, nonetheless still encouraged to help out the community by showing up on Saturday to staff (or play!).

Eight teams are currently registered, five of which are "CO proper" teams. I'll post in more detail in a few days. The field is half-full; get your registrations in!

I've hijacked Auroni's post at the top of the thread to show you just that.

Two things:

1. There are currently 11 registered teams, 8 of which currently have priority registration. The field cap is at 16 right now, and we'll know from John within the next few weeks whether we'll have the rooms to expand that if demand warrants.

2. There are currently three teams with four free-agent spots. I encourage these teams to fill these spots soon so we can figure out how many teams we should expect, and current free agents should feel free to contact the people on those teams to see if they can fill those spots as well.
