I Buzzed First! - a new iPhone Quiz Bowl Buzzer app

Post by ibuzzedfirst »

Hi all,

just a quick note to make you aware of the new iPhone app "I Buzzed First!", available now from the Apple App Store at http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/i-buzzed ... 22820?mt=8

The app is perfect for hosting Quiz Bowl type quizzes - each player runs the app on their iPhone in Contestant mode, and another iPhone runs as the Quiz Master. The first to buzz in with their buzzer locks all the other contestants out, until the quiz master starts the next round.

You can see I Buzzed First! in action on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/embed/MN9RHyMjTzA and there is a website as well at http://www.ibuzzedfirst.com

You may possibly have heard of it, as one teacher in West Virginia has already used the app to host a quiz bowl at their school.

Enjoy!

I received a support email from a gentleman named Greg Oliver who identified himself as a teacher, and that he used the app to host a quiz bowl in his school. Unfortunately he didn't tell me the name of the school, but he was using a http://www.stratuswave.net email address, who serve West Virginia, so I assume that's where the school is.

At first glance, this idea seems to be a very creative work-around for teams that aren't willing or able to shell out the money necessary for a buzzer system instead of the $.99 per device that this app would cost. However, several practical limitations kind of get in the way of its utility for practice or competition. The requirement that all devices share the same Wi-fi network instead of a 3G connection greatly restricts its mobility as a portable buzzer system in comparison to a physical one. Of course, there is the requirement that there exist 3 such devices using the requisite platform in the same location at the same time (more if more people are playing). Devices like IPhones and IPads are becoming more common but are by no means ubiquitous, so that poses another problem for accessibility. I have not personally tested this system, but there have previously been concerns over the reliability of wireless buzzing (my concerns here may be unfounded, as I have witnessed a fantastic wireless system at Texas Invitational). All I'm really saying in this post is that teams may find it more convenient to use clapbowl or a physical system because of the many requirements of this app.

Thanks for your comments. This is indeed the main selling point of I Buzzed First!, in that it enables many contestants to quickly and cheaply setup an interactive buzzer system. It is immiediately expandable, and supports any number of contestants simultaneously, whether that is 3, 5, 15, 20, or more.

As you point out, the main requirements are for each contestant and a quiz master to have an iPhone with the app loaded, and all the users to be connected to the same WiFi network.

I should point out that although a WiFi connection is required, internet connectivity is not. A workable solution if in a hall etc, would be to have a WiFi router plugged into a power socket, without any supporting phone line or network, and have all the iPhones connect to that. All the app requires is local connectivity to the other devices, not to the 'outside world'. At a real push, if you had no WiFi network available, but did have another iPhone available, another solution would be to 'share' the connectivity of a spare iPhone to provide an adhoc network.

Of course all this is unnecessary if a normal WiFi connection is available.

Also, although only available for the iPhone as of right now, I can tell you that a fully compatible version of I Buzzed First! is in development for all Android phones, and will hopefully be available within the next week. I will make a proper announcement when the Android version is released.

Hope this helps,
Nick Talbot

So, Auburn decided to spend a few dollars for this app. We can not get it to work in any combination or iphones/androids/ipods. I am not sure if it is due to our school's wireless set up, but it is not working in the slightest.

Hi jmannor2, thanks for buying the app. Could you contact me directly at [email protected] ? I'm sure we can get it working correctly.

There may be a tweak required to your school's wireless setup. It appears that some public wifi routers are configured slightly differently from home routers. The app depends on UDP broadcast packets being forwarded by the router you are connected to, for quiz/contestant discovery to work correctly.

Could you try connecting to a home/residential WiFi network and see if the problem still exists? The app has been tested on many WiFi networks with success. I demonstrated it yesterday with no problems.

Please get in touch, and I'm sure we can get you going,

Regards,
Nick Talbot
