Berkeley's middle school tournament (Berkeley, CA, 4/27/14)

Post by Important Bird Area »

The Northern California Quiz Bowl Alliance and Berkeley Quiz Bowl are pleased to announce that Berkeley will host its first middle school quizbowl tournament on Sunday, April 27, 2014.

Location: This tournament will take place at UC Berkeley. Tournament headquarters will be in Dwinelle Hall; some game rooms will be in Wheeler Hall across Sproul Plaza. The Berkeley campus map is available here.

Questions: We will be using NAQT Middle School Series #10. (For practice material similar to the questions we will use at the tournament, please consider the NAQT New Middle School Package and the 2013 Collaborative Middle School Tournament.)

The top 15% of teams will qualify for the 2014 NAQT Middle School National Championship Tournament, to be held in Atlanta on May 10-11, 2014.

Eligibility: All middle schools (public, private, charter, religious, homeschool, etc.) are eligible to play in this event. This tournament is open to any players who have not yet completed 8th grade, though the questions are targeted at 7th and 8th graders.

Schools are encouraged to enter multiple teams, but please note that players must play for the same team throughout the tournament.

Fees:

Base fee: $60 per team

$10 discount for second or subsequent team from the same school

$10 discount per working buzzer system (must accommodate at least eight players)

$20 discount per experienced moderator

$10 discount per scorekeeper (We will hold a brief training session during check-in for those volunteers who have never kept score before.)

Payment will be taken at check-in on April 27th. Please make checks out to Tanay Kothari.

How to register: please contact the tournament director, Jeff Hoppes ([email protected]), on or before Monday, April 21st, indicating how many teams, buzzers, and staff your school plans to bring.

The UC Berkeley Quiz Bowl Club is a student group acting independently of the University of California. The student organization is the host of the Berkeley middle school tournament and takes full responsibility for the guests.

Congratulations to Diablo Vista A, which defeated Stratford-Santa Clara 360-300 in a one-game final to win Berkeley's middle school tournament! Challenger-Berryessa and Challenger-Sunnyvale A tied for third place.

Complete team and individual statistics are available here.

Thanks to all of our staff from Berkeley and from the teams. Graduating eighth-graders: please keep in touch, and we'll see you at Bellarmine Novice 2014!

Welcome to the forums, Deepa!

I expect that next year's tournament schedule will be similar to this year's: one tournament per month in December/January/February/March or April.
