Post by Jcarlson »

Hello!

The Charter School of Wilmington is proud to present our annual Charter Challenge quiz bowl tournament for middle school students on March 8th, 2014.

NOTE: The date was changed from February 15th to March 8th. If this changes your ability to attend, please let us know via post or email.

REGISTRATION:
Register by filling out this form! https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1g-cNJ7 ... o/viewform

Registration will open on January 1st, and we will close the field on March 1st. Sign up now to reserve your spot!

LOCATION:
Wilmington Charter is located at 100 N. DuPont Rd, Wilmington, DE. Directions are here: https://www.google.com/maps/preview#!q= ... -75.587794

TIMING:
We will begin registration at 7:30 A.M. and continue until 8:30. Rounds will start by 9. We should finish around 4:30-5:30.

RULES:
The tournament will use the NAQT packet MS-10. Because of this, the top 15% of the competition will qualify for the MSNCT: (http://www.naqt.com/ms/msnct/qualification.html).
The tournament will also follow standard NAQT rules (http://www.naqt.com/downloads/rules.pdf), except:
There will be no computation tossups or bonuses.
There will be no timed rounds.

We will be hosting a JV and Varsity division. Both divisions will be using MS-10.
JV players should be in 6th grade or younger, or be in their first year of playing quizbowl. Varsity players should be in 8th grade or younger - whether to place a team in the Varsity division is up to a team's own discretion.
Prizes will go to the top three individuals, as well as the top three teams, in both divisions. There will also be a prize for the winner of the consolation rounds.

FEES:
1st Team: $65
Subsequent Teams: $55

Is this date correct?

NAQT currently has "tentatively 2/22" on their website, so that might need an update.

I've emailed NAQT, so they should probably be updating that soon.

Hello!

Charter Challenge for New Teams:

Every year, we have some teams competing in the Charter Challenge who are newer or less experienced at quizbowl. With that in mind, here are some resources to help these teams (and everyone else) at the meet!

If you are one of these teams, feel free to use this information. If you know a school who would be interested in starting a team/sending a new team to a tournament, feel free to send this to them.

http://www.naqt.com/YouGottaKnow/ Mostly for high schoolers, but still helpful.
http://www.quizbowlpackets.com/ The 4 Collaborative Middle School Tournaments are a bit harder than NAQT middle school packets, but they make good practice, as does the Junior Wildcat Tournament. Reading packets is one of the best ways for new teams to improve!
http://www.quinterest.org/ and http://protobowl.com/msquizbowl These are helpful for finding practice questions and for getting an idea of what sorts of questions tend to be asked.
http://www.cram.com/tag/quizbowl Some flashcards.
http://www.mpsaz.org/nal/resources/file ... _wiley.pdf With the exception of the Language, Foreign Language, and Math sections, this book provides some very helpful information for middle school quiz bowlers. It's extremely comprehensive.
http://naqt.com/samples/t1985packet_01.pdf This is probably the most important source - it is the type of packet which we will be using at our tournament.

Hope this helps!

If any Charter team members (or anyone else) has anything good to add, post it here!

Hello!

If any participating teams would like to take packets home after the tournament, please request them here. We are trying to run a paperless tournament, but we will print out as many packets as visiting teams want.

Thanks!

Unfortunately, we can't send out electronic copies of packets; it's against NAQT rules. However, we can give your team a paper copy if you want one.

Hello!

Even with outside buzzer systems we have, we are still currently short 5 buzzer systems. Any team that can bring an extra lockout buzzer system will get a discount. It would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

We would like one copy of the questions.

Sorry that I only have the one buzzer system that I already committed to bring.

See you Saturday!
