Natl History Bowl Middle School Nationals: 5/18-19 - DC/N VA

Post by Great Bustard »

The National History Bowl is pleased to announce that its second Middle School National Championships will be held on the weekend of May 18-19, 2013 in Washington, DC and Northern Virginia. This tournament will not feature a Bee, as our Elementary and Middle School National History Bee is working on a separate basis this year. Last year, we had 12 teams compete; this year, we expect 25-50. For now, the field will be capped at 60 teams, though we expect to have rooms and staff to increase this number if need be.
To qualify, teams need to finish either in the top half of a solely middle and elementary school division at any NHBB regional tournament, or beat a high school team in a mixed division. Registration will open on January 1; we're also in the process of concluding hotel arrangements and will post the official rate and hotel here when we have it.
Teams can expect a minimum of 8 matches; five in the morning on Saturday and three in the afternoon. On Saturday evening, we may have an informal entertainment and sports history tournament if we can secure rooms at the hotel. We anticipate the playoffs will be on Sunday at Mount Vernon, though we are still in the process of confirming those arrangements. If it can be worked out, then competing teams (anywhere from 8-12 teams is most likely) at Mount Vernon on Sunday would play a minimum of an additional three matches, and they would also have sufficient time (~2-3 hours) to tour the grounds and participate in a number of special activities. We may also be able to offer a consolation division for interested teams on Sunday morning who didn't make the playoffs. If this works out, there would be no extra charge involved, and teams would be able to play 3 or 4 additional games.
The fee structure for this tournament will be the same as for our high school National Championships this year, (i.e. $525 base fee, host school discount $50, reader discount $90), except no buzzer discount will be offered, as NHBB owns enough systems (41 at last count) to handle things. Also, teams will need to have an advisor actually at all times - thus any team selecting the reader discount will need to have 2 adults (one can be a parent) minimum.

We hope your school will be able to join us!
