Gladiator Fall Tournament (Elm Grove, WI); Nov. 10, 2012

Post by MichaelFalk »

Dear students, teachers, and coaches:

St. Mary's Visitation School in Elm Grove, WI is delighted to announce that we will host the Gladiator Fall Tournament 2012 on Saturday, November 10, 2012. This is an open junior high (grades 6-8) quiz bowl tournament to played on NAQT's MS-04 question set. We follow NAQT rules except that instead of timed halves, we will play two ten-tossup halves with bonuses.

The entry fee is $60 per team, with a $10 discount for bringing a working buzzer system and a $10 discount on a second (and subsequent) team. The exact schedule will depend on the number of teams, but in past tournaments, teams have played eight or nine games, which is our goal.

I expect this to be a qualifier for MSNCT. I will check this thread for questions, or you can email me at: mfalk, followed by the at symbol, stmaryeg, dot, org.

Thanks! We hope to see you at SMV on the 10th of November.

Hi, all,

Thanks to the many people who came out to Gladiator Fall Tournament 2012 today! With 14 teams, we split into two divisions (Kinetic Energy and Potential Energy), who each played a 7-team round robin. Each team also played a cross-bracket game, which we counted in statistics but did not consider in placing teams into playoff brackets.

Snap Bracket (championship):
K1. Station B (7-0; 6-0 in division)
K2. Quest Red (6-1; 5-1 in division)
P1. Station A (7-0; 6-0 in division)
P2. SMV Gold (5-2; 5-1 in division)

Crackle Bracket:
K3. SMV Silver (4-3; 4-2 in division)
K4. Quest Silver (3-4; 3-3 in division)
P3. Station C (5-2; 4-2 in division)
P4. Keith (4-3; 3-3 in division)

Pop Bracket:
K5. SMV Blue (3-4; 2-4 in division)
K6. SMV Black (1-6; 1-5 in division)
K7. St. Edward A (0-7; 0-6 in division)
P5. Quest Black (2-5; 2-4 in division)
P6. SMV White (2-5; 1-5 in division)
P7. St. Edward B (0-7; 0-6 in division)

In the Snap Bracket, Station B cleared the field to be crowned tournament champion. Teams did not replay the one team in their bracket that was in their division; that game in the preliminaries carried into the playoffs. Final placement:
1. Station B (9-0; 3-0 in playoffs)
2. Station A (8-1; 2-1 in playoffs)
3. SMV Gold (6-3; 1-2 in playoffs)
4. Quest Red (6-3; 0-3 in playoffs)

5t. Station C (6-3; 2-1 in playoffs)
5t. SMV Silver (5-4; 2-1 in playoffs)
7t. Keith (5-4; 1-2 in playoffs)
7t. Quest Silver (4-5; 1-2 in playoffs)

9t. SMV Blue (5-4; 2-0 in playoffs)
9t. SMV Black (3-6; 2-0 in playoffs)
11t. Quest Black (3-6; 1-1 in playoffs)
11t. SMV White (3-6; 1-1 in playoffs)
13t. St. Edward A (0-9; 0-2 in playoffs)
13t. St. Edward B (0-9; 0-2 in playoffs)

I will post details on Monday (I seem to have left the sheet at school) but we did a shootout with the last packet, based on the leaders after the round robin. Pranav from Station A took first, Matthew from Station A took second, and James from SMV Gold took third.

Many thanks to my co-conspirators, Burke Seeberg and Kylie Daemmrich, to my stats genius Beth Parey, and to our volunteer moderators and scorekeepers: both Allen Witkowskis, Jeff Price, Will Puchner, Paul Grum, Neil McLinden, Alana Parey, Noah Propp, Nicholas Peters, and Molly Carrig. Thanks also to the parents who coached the SMV teams today and to the players, coaches, and parents from all of the schools that came. We hope to see you in spring for the Gladiator Open!

Thanks for hosting another great tournament, Michael! I forgot to ask what the password theme was... There's a chance that a tournament for middle school teams could happen in Rockford on an IS-A set at Auburn in early January, BTW.

Jeff,

Thanks for the kind comments. I was very pleased at how few glitches there were, and how most teams finished their final game before 2:45. Even with trophies, prizes, and the shootout, I think every team was on the road by 3:05. Thanks again to you and your dedicated parents, and your polite kids who were good sports and who helped set up, tear down, and clean up. (This goes for St. Edward, Quest, and Keith, too.)

I'm excited for the IS-A set, but I also hope that you or Kristin Burns decide to host MS-05.

The passwords I used were first names of composers that Mrs. Falk and I like. (Or, in the case of the first, not a composer but the namesake of a genre): gregory (the pope), hildegard (of bingen), claudio (monteverdi), henry (purcell), antonio (vivaldi), jean-philippe (rameau), giovanni (pergolesi), frederic (chopin), igor (stravinsky), and olivier (messiaen).

Great tournament, Mr. Falk! We love coming to visit SMV and the kids had a blast! Thank you to you, your co-tournament directors, and your school for making us feel welcome and providing a great experience for the kids.
