Periodic table posters in classrooms

Post by no ice »

Should teams be allowed to freely look at or consult the giant periodic table poster in a science classroom during a game, if covering it up or taking it down is not an option?

Given that teams usually have only 5 seconds or so to answer bonuses and such, and that tossups on elements rarely give information like "name this element with atomic number 10" until the very end of the question, I'm not sure of the utility of consulting a classroom poster during a game.

I would say it's probably the same thing as there being a poster with all the presidents or a giant map; everyone has an equal advantage (unless I guess it's a bonus, but hopefully we're not writing binary matching bonuses anymore) and the advantage is probably nil.

Back in the olden days (and also in these days), VHSL had these covered up.

In a normal quizbowl match w/ 5-second rules there is no time to use them. Nor do most people have the eyesight required.

I have never found this to be a problem. If you think it might be, simply facing the game setup in another direction will probably help, if that's possible.

If only one team can see it and the other cannot, it conceivably make a difference. I'd err on the side of avoiding the appearance of impropriety.

Another play, set in Grover’s Corners, sees George Gibbs and Emily Webb getting married. For 10 points, name this American playwright and author of The Skin of Our Teeth and Our Town.
I read this at Sacramento Jesuit. There was a giant poster up in the classroom advertising Jesuit's fall play: a production of... Theophilus North!

Our team once 30'd a bonus on tectonic plates due to the presence of a large map of the world complete with tectonic plates.

This is one of those things that can be a minor issue and can be difficult to eliminate. I do think that one time, I disqualified an answer from a person who ostentatiously looked over my shoulder at the periodic table on the wall.

My question would be, where can a moderator draw the line and just replace the bonus?
