NIU Huskie Bowl/Prison Bowl Mirror 02/06/2010

Postby TheDoctor » Sat Nov 28, 2009 4:03 pm

The NIU Quiz Bowl Association, in cooperation with the NIU Honors Department, is pleased to announce the return of the Huskie Bowl on 6 February 2010. We're running two divisions this year. The upper division will be a mirror of Hunter College High School’s Prison Bowl III. The lower division will be played (hopefully) on an as-yet unknown NAQT A set. Both divisions will be played on 20/20 rounds, negs but no powers.

The field is currently limited to 12 teams per division, though the cap may change with interest and moderator availability. All teams are guaranteed a full day of play. Right now, we're planning on a full round robin for each division, but this may change depending on field size and other factors.

After the tournament, we will host Trashtwostrophe as a side event, courtesy of Jeff Geringer and Dan Donohue (from whom more information on this event will be forthcoming).

Cost:
Basic entry fee: $70/team
Extra team discount: -$5/additional team
Buzzer discount: -$5/buzzer
Travel discount (over 200 miles by Google Maps): -$10
Minimum fee: $50

E-mail with registration information or questions at NIUquizbowl at gmail dot com.

Edit: clarity and grammar

We are, as ever, looking for moderators. We offer free lunch to all moderators for Huskie Bowl proper and free dinner to all moderators for Trashtwostrophe. Also, if you moderate on your laptop, you get your very own electronic copy of the questions!*

*Prison Bowl and Trashtwostrophe only, naturally.

Finally a Prison Bowl mirror in Illinois! May I play this? If I can't, I'll staff.

EDIT: I hope Jeff has been in touch with you re: Trash2strophe, because he's taking the lead on it, given my involvement with VIOLATEDD.

Due to participation in a science bowl regional event, if Auburn does attend this, it'll be really depleted.

There's only one spot open in each division at the moment, so if you want to sign up do it now. (St. Charles East and Auburn C are added to the Huskie Bowl division, but I'm too lazy at the moment to make a real field update.)

OK, field update, mostly so I can talk about Trashtwostrophe. But hey, we've had a few changes in the field, so it's not entirely gratuitous.

Prison Bowl Mirror
Auburn A
DCC
Fenton
Fremd A
Hobo
Lisle
Loyola A
Maine South
Naperville Central
New Trier
Oak Park River Forest
Serenity

Huskie Bowl
Auburn B
Auburn C
Boylan
Fremd B
Hiawatha
Loyola B
Rolling Meadows A
Rolling Meadows B
St. Charles East
Sterling
Stillman Valley
(opening to be filled by a waitlisted team - if you're interested in jumping on the waitlist bandwagon, email me)

OK, Trashtwostrophe. If you're interested in playing and you're NOT on the field list below, you must contact me (Brad - styxman42@gmail.com) quickly. We've run into our moderator cap for this - teams that register from now on will need to volunteer a moderator to be admitted into the field - otherwise, you'll be waitlisted in order of registration. Again, Trashtwostrophe is tossups only, so moderators don't need to be incredibly experienced - talk with me if you're interested!

Trashtwostrophe field (most clever names to be devised later)

Serenity Engine Room (Kaylee/Mal)
Fenton A
Fenton B
Fenton C
OPRF A (Ben/Luke)
OPRF B (Greg/Caleb)
St. Charles A (Clara/Katy)
St. Charles B (Mark/Coach Greg)
Sam Krc/Mike Perovanovic

Through 5 rounds of the Prison Bowl RR, Auburn is undefeated with victories over DCC and Serenity, among others. Replacing OPRF in the field is Proviso North, which defeated a 1 loss Loyola team.

The playoff bracket in the Huskie Bowl division features undefeated Auburn B, as well as Niles West and (another team I can't remember) who went 4-1 in the other morning pool.

Well it was a one-game final, so add one to the full round robin. I wasn't there.

Packet 12, maybe. I dunno, it was the twelfth round. Does that tell you enough?

Besides revealing who won the Prison Bowl Mirror, can anyone who was there provide a more detailed narrative? For example, without revealing anything specific about the questions, what was the general view of their quality? What were typical scores like? If the last match was "interesting". what made it interesting? How competitive, overall, was the tournament? Did Auburn walk away with it, or were there close matches throughout? Who else besides Auburn played well? And, will stats be posted in the near future?

Curious here in New Jersey.

I'm on an iPod so I can't be extremely detailed.

In general, I think the question quality was good. We were missing our 2nd highest scorer and our primary science player, and this was rightfully reflected in bonus conversion for things like science and math theory. I think the difficulty was about right, with an occasional impossible third part or a somewhat-too-easy tossup or bonus here or there. Overall, though, we really enjoyed the set and it rewarded deep knowledge, as a good set should.

We did not simply walk away with it. We lost to Loyola Academy by 20 and won the final against Serenity 305-300. It was sealed with Lloyd getting the second last tossup, and us not buzzing (so we wouldn't neg anything) on tossup 20.

Sounds like it was exciting. Thanks for the extra details. Can anyone else enlighten us with further enrichments?

I really enjoyed the set. It was a nice balance of canonical and new answers, with things almost never being factually incorrect, transparent, etc. My biggest complaint (and once I'm off my phone and looking at the packets I'll be able to elaborate) was that a handful of clues (particularly in the humanities) could have been a tiny bit more substantive.

Otherwise, it was a good day of good quizbowl, and an extremely effecient one. We finished 11 rounds by 4:00, so congrats and thank you to kristen and brad for their excellent TDing. Same to the speedy moderators. With the decline of f/s tourneys, I thought a lower division was a fantastic idea and I'd love to see it be done elsewhere.

Here are stats - Kristin will have a full writeup of an excellent day of quizbowl later on.

Huskie Bowl (IS-89A; Niles West def. Auburn B in 1 game final)

It's worth noting that Auburn A's seniors were both absent (Jordan Hoffmann and myself) due to science bowl regionals. In retrospect (since we didn't win science bowl), I wish I was at NIU. Sounds like it was a good day. I'm extremely proud of how Lloyd et al stepped up and won this thing. Abid showed today why the concept of LloyBid is relevant to quiz bowl, and I heard my boy Filip wrecked some history. That's what I like to hear.

On another note, Serenity's PPB stats are really nice. It'll be interesting to see once the real Prison Bowl is played, since everything will he put into context.

Edit: Thoroughness.

Overall, this was an awesomely run tournament and really fun to moderate. Even in the Huskie Bowl brackets, there was good buzzes and some really good kids playing. One of the best tournaments that I have ever been a part of. Kudos to both of you Brad and Kristin. Also Nice Job Auburn and Serenity on a close fought final match and Niles West and Auburn B with great matches down the stretch for the Huskie Bowl portion.

P.S. I LOVE TRASH

These are very high PPBs for a Prison Bowl set, considering i've read every round of the previous last two years' sets. I trust the questions were made way more accessible this time around.
