Minnesota Spring Tournament: Chitin Classic. 4/5 at the U.

Post by theMoMA »

This is a preliminary announcement for Minnesota's first house-written high school tournament, to be held on April 5. The Chitin Classic will be held at Coffman Memorial Union, located at 300 Washington Ave. SE, Minneapolis 55455, on the beautiful University of Minnesota Campus.

UPDATE: We will begin registration at 8:15 AM, with games starting at 9 AM, or whenever we are ready. Please make an effort to be as on-time as possible so that we can use our time to play quizbowl and not to dilly-dally.

Rounds will be conducted on 12 packets of 20/20 tossup/bonuses. The tossups will be similar in length, style, and distribution to PACE, though they will be at the regular high school difficulty level. Further details are available upon request. Each team is guaranteed seven games, though we might change that in the upward direction at some point, since we really haven't discussed how the format will work and can't reasonably do so until we can figure out a rough estimate of how many teams will attend.

The packets will be written as a collaboration between the Universities of Minnesota, Maryland, and Vanderbilt, and this packetset will be used at Maryland's Spring Classic and Vandy's 4/5 high school tournament. Obviously, this means that there will be restrictions on talking about specific questions until both tournaments have concluded, and that teams cannot participate in both tournaments.

Here's the fee table (subject to minor changes):
$70: Base Fee
-$10: Each additional team
-$10: Each working buzzer system
-$15: Out of state schools (once per school)

Please contact me at [email protected] if you have any questions at all about the tournament logistics, distribution, lodging suggestions, or anything else. To register for the tournament, please contact Rita Otto at ottox131 [at] umn [period] edu, and CC me ([email protected]) so I can provide field updates.

I hope to see a great turnout for what promises to be an awesome tournament in early April!

Stay tuned for periodic field updates, as well as more detailed logistics, such as start time, meeting room, etc.

Thanks,

Andrew Hart

Holmen is bringing six teams! Wow. Also I like that of the first eight teams registered, zero are from Minnesota.

We're working on it. I think it's mainly a numbers/teams issue. Expect official word soon.

We need more than that Rob! How many teams have committed suicide after playing Dorman, what crazy things have the GSFHSA folks said?

A live blog would be nice. Has a Dorman-EP (Byko's 1 and 2) match gone down yet?

GSFHSA is not here, I don't know where you heard that. YOU CRAZY PERSON

Dorman and EP are in separate brackets and will not play each other until the playoffs.

In the one match I have read for Dorman A so far, they thirtied all 14 of their bonuses. Admittedly, the prelim rounds are easier than the playoff rounds, but daaaaaaaaaaamn. That is amazing.

Stats for this tournament are being updated every 30 mins or so, and can be found online at http://www.tc.umn.edu/~kand0028/quiz_bo ... dings.html

They will probably be refined at the end of the day to indicate the playoff bracketology.

EDIT: Also, Wallace Stevens Lit Singles Mirror is definitely happening.

I'd like to thank everyone who came to the tournament today. I was beyond impressed with the strength of teams, and it was amazing to have such a quality field fly and drive so far to play our tournament.

Full stats here.

The top three teams at the tournament were:
1) Dorman. They went undefeated through 9 prelim games, and beat Eden Prairie A decisively in the final to claim the first ever Chitin Classic championship.
2) Eden Prairie A. Twice defeated by Dorman.
3) Detroit Cathlic Central. Only two losses came in a close game against Eden Prairie, and against Dorman.

Rounding out the top bracket:
4) Eden Prairie B
5) Wayzata Area
6) Armstrong B

In the second bracket:
7) Armstrong A
8) Mounds Park
9) Eden Prairie C
10) St. Thomas B
11) Roseville
12) Holmen A

Top scorers through the non-championship games:
1) Carsten, Wayzata Area: 18-61-6 (9 GP), 94.4 PPG
2) Michael, Eden Prairie A: 17-47-9 (8 GP), 85 PPG
3) Nick, Dorman: 26-34-3 (9 GP), 79.4 PPG
4) Brett, Detroit Catholic Central: 15-40-7 (7.5 GP), 78.7 PPG
5) Neil, Eden Prairie C: 3-36-3 (8 GP), 48.8 PPG
6) Paolo, Dorman: 15-22-6 (9 GP), 45.6 PPG
7) Xi, Eden Prairie B: 12-25-4 (9 GP), 45.6 PPG
8) George, Dorman: 22-9-7 (9 GP), 42.8 PPG

Major thanks to the kind fellows at Maryland and Vanderbilt, who wrote awesome packets.

I understand it was cost prohibitive, but it would have been interesting to see Dorman B in the field. Based on scoring margins, might have been another Dorman-Dorman championship.

Figured I would post this here too (even before I post our own stats), but K State is using these questions in a couple weeks, so please refrain from mentioning specifics on here.

Hello

One of the playoff games between Armstrong B and Dorman was entered in at the last minute, but the file probably wasn't saved. I don't think the finals game between EP A and Dorman was entered either. I'll try to get the scoresheets and enter it in.

Overall, it was a great tournament-running experinece, and I liked keeping the stats. :)

Good luck to all the teams who'll play at the mirrors and the upcoming national tournaments!
