Smithtown West Invitational Season Starter I (NY, 9/17/16)

Post by a Joe »

I am pleased to announce that Smithtown High School West will be hosting the inaugural Smithtown West Invitational Season Starter (SWISS 1) on September 17, 2016, from 8:30 AM to about 5 PM.

Location:

Smithtown West is located at 100 Central Road, Smithtown, NY, about 5-10 minutes north of the LIE's exit 55. Further directions will be sent upon signing up for the tournament.

Questions/Format:

SWISS 1 will be using NAQT's IS-158, a regular-difficulty high school set. There will be no computational math tossups; there will, however, be computational math bonuses. The tournament will be untimed in standard 20/20 format. Teams will be semi-randomly placed into preliminary brackets before being re-seeded for playoffs. Teams will be offered a minimum of 10 games; teams will be expected to play all 10 rounds, even if you are in consolation. Trophies will be awarded to the top 4 teams, and book prizes will be awarded to the top 5 individuals, with a trophy for the individual with the highest PPG overall.

Fees:

-- $75 per first team
-- $65 each additional team, up to 4
-- (-$5) per fully functional buzzer system, limit 4
-- (-$10) per moderator, no limit
-- (-$10) per 150 miles traveled (one-way only)
-- $15 for a set of the questions if you so choose
(There is a minimum fee of $20.)

All teams should pay prior to the tournament by mailing a check or on the day of the tournament by cash/check. Please do not mail cash. We cannot process POs, any type of card, paypal, or any other form of payment. If you require an invoice, please let us know and we will take care of that right away. Please make out checks to "Smithtown High School West." Please ensure that you register prior to the day of the tournament.

In order to register, please follow one of these options:

- Fill out this form: http://goo.gl/forms/e4gdnk6hnjkdXciD3

OR

- Email us at [email protected] with the following:
• Number of teams/buzzers/staffers/question sets
• Name of school, and pseudonym if applicable
• An email address where we can reach you
• A cell number of someone, preferably your coach, that can be reached on the day of (if you are running late, etc.)

Once you receive a confirmation from us, you are officially registered.

Teams:

There are a maximum of 6 players per team, four of whom may play at once. If you wish to bring more players than that, please sign up additional teams. There are no exceptions to this rule. Teams may play short, with one player as a minimum. Nobody may switch teams during the tournament, such as from "A" to "B" or otherwise.

We ask that you please have at least one coach, parent, guardian, or other adult accompanying you at this tournament. Feel free to contact me if this will be a problem.

The field is, for now, capped at 24 teams. If there is a large amount of interest, this may well increase beyond that limit. You will be placed onto a waitlist if you miss the cutoff and will enter the field as teams drop or the field expands.

Stats:

Full and complete team and individual stats will be posted within 24 hours after the completion of the tournament on this page.

Food:

Smithtown will provide a light breakfast of bagels and coffee, but you should definitely eat something more substantive prior to the tournament. We will not provide lunch, but we will give a list of many fine local eateries in the Smithtown and Kings Park area. Sadly, none of these are within walking distance, but you can get something delivered to the school if need be.

Please let us know if you have any further questions!

We look forward to seeing a variety of teams from the tri-state area and beyond on the 17th!

Shameless self-bump. Get those registrations in! It's less than a month away, and there's tons of room in the field!

Also, we now have an option (which we prefer) to use the NAQT registration system, as found here: https://www.naqt.com/registration/regis ... nt_id=7438.

Two weeks and 13 spots left! C'mon, where are those Tri-State teams?

EDIT: Also, after some consultation, we have decided to close registration next Wednesday, so please do get those registrations in!

I am extremely honored to announce that SWISS is now platinum-certified by PACE!

I am also saddened to announce that Commack has dropped; we decided to contract the field to 16.

Also, a reminder that there MUST be a coach or other advisor present with you for this competition; my principal has personally mandated this. If you do not come with a coach (I believe all of you are), I apologize, but, as per his orders, I must send you home. So avoid that entirely and bring a coach!

So this happened!

West Egg won first, Kellenberg won second, and North Babylon won third. Ward Melville and Kings Park tied for fourth (WM had a higher PPB, but KP had a higher PPG). (A trophy will be forthcoming to KP, delivered approximately someday). All those teams are their school's respective A teams.

We'd like to thank everyone for coming out! A better wrap-up will be posted in a few days. Stats will be up tomorrow or Monday.
