Massachusetts NAQT State Championship @ MIT (April 11, 2015)

Post by t-bar »

MIT will host the Massachusetts NAQT State Championship on Saturday, April 11, 2015.

REGISTRATION
This tournament is open to high school teams from Massachusetts. Teams will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis, so please register as soon as possible. The maximum number of teams is 24, and will likely stay at that number. For our convenience and your benefit, we request that you register as soon as you can. The registration form and instructions are available at http://quizbowl.mit.edu/naqtstate.

LOGISTICS
The tournament will be held on the MIT campus. Check-in on the morning of the tournament will run from 8:30 to 9:00 AM in room 4-270, which is located on the first floor of MIT’s Building 4. Games will start as soon as possible after everyone has arrived, and will take place in Buildings 4 and 26. If everything goes smoothly, we anticipate being done by roughly 5:00 PM.

QUESTIONS
We will be using NAQT’s question set IS-146. You can download a sample packet here.

We will provide a paper copy of the questions to all teams that want one for no cost. Please let us know in your registration if you want one so that we can make the proper number of copies.

NATIONAL TOURNAMENTS
The top 15% of the field will qualify for NAQT’s 2015 High School National Championship Tournament. In addition, if all of the teams in the top 15% have already qualified for HSNCT, then the top not-yet-qualified team will also qualify. More information about the HSNCT is available here.

Any small schools that finish in the top 15% of the field will qualify for NAQT’s Small School National Championship Tournament. The top-finishing small school that has not yet qualified will also qualify for SSNCT if it finishes outside of the top 15%. More information about the SSNCT is available here.

Finally, we will be seeking affiliation with PACE, so that at least 15% and potentially up to 25% of the top finishers will qualify for PACE’s National Scholastic Championship. More information about the NSC is available here.

RULES
The game format will have 20 tossup questions answerable by either team. If a team answers a tossup correctly, it will have an opportunity to answer an unrelated multi-part bonus question. There will be no computational math questions.

Each team may have up to six players on its roster, though only four players may play at any given time. If you intend to bring seven or more players, please register another team.

There will be a playoff format to be determined by the number of teams, but it will likely be some form of round-robin. All teams will be guaranteed to play at least 9 games, and all teams will be matched in the playoff rounds against teams of similar skill level.

FEES
The fees for this tournament are as follows:

+$75 first team from a school
+$65 each subsequent team
−$10 discount per working buzzer system
−$10 discount per staffer provided
The minimum fee for a school is $0.

If you have any questions regarding the tournament, you can visit http://quizbowl.mit.edu/naqtstate, or e-mail me at [email protected]. Shortly before the tournament, we will contact registered teams with more detailed information. We look forward to a large and competitive tournament and hope to see you on April 11, 2015!

Is this tournament only for Massachusetts teams, or are teams from states without an NAQT championship allowed to enter a state finals for another state? NH does not have its own NAQT championship.

That being said, it would be great to have a New Hampshire state championship this spring. Teams interested in hosting should contact me.

With the registration of Newton South, our field is now full. Interested teams should continue to register; they will be placed on a waitlist, to be added if spots open up in the field.

EDIT: After some drops, we are back to having one spot available in the field. Sign up to claim it ASAP!

EDIT: Back to closed for now. (3/30/15)

I was under the impression that we weren't sending a NASAT team this year.
