2015 NAQT Metro NY State Championship - March 7th @ Columbia

Post by Urech hydantoin synthesis »

The Quiz Bowl team of Columbia University is pleased to announce that we will be hosting the NAQT Metro New York State Championship on Saturday, March 7, 2015. This tournament is open to any high school team in New York that wishes to attend, though teams closer to Ithaca may want to consider the Upstate New York championship being hosted at Cornell. Please note that although this is a state championship tournament, no prior qualification is necessary to register.

The questions will come from the NAQT Invitational Series #146 set. More information about the distribution can be found here.

Teams that place in the top 15% at this tournament (rounded up) will qualify for the NAQT High School National Championship Tournament, which will be held on May 29-31 at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare in Chicago, IL. The top 15% of small schools (according to the NAQT definition) will qualify for the NAQT Small School National Championship Tournament, which will be held on April 24-26 at the Hilton Atlanta. In addition, if all the teams in the top 15% of the field have already qualified to the HSNCT at a prior tournament, the highest placing team not in the top 15% will also qualify. The same applies to qualification for the SSNCT.

If this tournament becomes Platinum affiliated with the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence, then the top 25% of teams will qualify for the PACE National Scholastic Championship, which will be held June 6-7 at the Hyatt Regency Reston in Reston, VA.

All matches at this tournament will follow untimed NAQT rules; this means games will consist of 20 tossups and up to 20 thirty-point, three-part bonuses. This tournament will initially be capped at 24 teams, so get your registrations in soon!

REGISTRATION AND FEES:

To register, e-mail Ben Zhang at [email protected] with the number of teams, buzzers, and staffers you want to bring. We also ask that all teams provide a cell phone number by which they can be contacted on the day of the tournament in the case of emergencies. You should receive prompt confirmation of your registration. Feel free to share this announcement with any schools you think would be interested in attending. There is no further registration form or other action needed on your part in order to be officially registered; you only need to e-mail Ben at that address with the information requested.

-The fee structure is as follows:

Base fee: $70 per team.
Buzzer discount*: $5 off school's total fee for each fully functional system.
Staffer discount*: $10 off school's total fee. This could be a coach or student who is not playing.
Travel discount: For teams travelling to the tournament from further upstate, we will be happy to work out travel discounts on a case-by-case basis.

*Buzzer discounts will only be awarded for fully functional units (i.e. the control box and all eight activators work). Volunteer staffers must stay through all the games (except finals) in order to receive credit for their school. If you intend to bring staff, please let us know earlier rather than later.

METHOD OF PAYMENT: All teams must pay by the day of the tournament. We prefer to accept payment in person during morning check-in, but we will accept checks by mail ahead of time if they will arrive by tournament day. We can accept cash, personal checks, or checks from school, school district, or quizbowl club funds. We have no ability to process purchase orders, credit cards, Paypal, or any other forms of payment; please do not bring them to the tournament expecting them to be accepted.

If you are paying by check, please make it payable to “Columbia University” with “Quiz Bowl” on the memo line. If you require a pre-tournament invoice in order to have a check cut, let us know as soon as possible so that we can send you the paperwork in time.

Unless special arrangements are made with the tournament director beforehand, any team that has not paid by the day of the tournament will be charged a $25 late fee and will have two weeks to pay in full before we start mailing letters to their school administration about it.

FORMAT: The field will be capped at 24 teams, but expansion might be possible if sufficient staff resources, room reservations, and interest in this tournament make it feasible.

A format will be devised when we have a clearer picture of how many staffers and teams will be in attendance. All teams will be offered a minimum of 9 games in any format. Trophies will be awarded to the top four overall teams and to the top small school team, and book prizes will be awarded to the top six individual scorers.

LOCATION: This tournament will probably take place in Hamilton Hall of Columbia University. We will let you know the exact building location as soon as room reservations are confirmed.

TRANSPORTATION AND PARKING: We strongly encourage all teams to take public transportation to the tournament if possible. The 1 train stops right outside campus, and a number of buses also stop nearby. There are a few parking garages in the neighborhood, but they can be expensive. Parking is sometimes available on Morningside Drive between 116th and 120th street.

TIMES: Registration will run from 8:00 to 8:30. An opening meeting will then follow, with the goal of starting Round 1 as soon as possible after 8:45. Teams arriving after 8:30 run the risk of forfeiting their first game or being dropped from the tournament.

TEAM & ROSTER SIZE: There may be a maximum of six players on one team's roster, up to four of whom may play at one time. There will be no exceptions to this rule. If you bring more than six players, you must register a second team to have all of them play. There will be a halftime substitution opportunity in each game. Each player may appear on only one team's roster throughout the day - no switching from the B team to the A team, etc. Teams may also play shorthanded if necessary.

FOOD: Neither breakfast nor lunch will be provided at this tournament. We will provide suggestions for local eateries upon request.

Please e-mail [email protected] if you have any further questions, or wish to register. We’re looking forward to seeing a wide variety of teams from New York competing for the championship on March 7th!

This tournament is almost half full. I think we'll have enough staff to expand to 28 teams, but 32 is a much nicer number. If you can staff this tournament, get in touch with me at [email protected].
