IHSSBCA Kickoff, 11/22/2014 @ Champaign Centennial
Hi quizbowl friends! On Saturday, November 22nd, Champaign Centennial High School will host a site of the IHSSBCA Kickoff tournament. I’m your director for this tournament.
I’m posting this to encourage you to register and to answer some questions you may have. You can post here or e-mail me with other questions and I’ll answer them.
WHO CAN PLAY?
This tournament is open to all high school teams, with the caveat that each school must have an IHSSBCA representative. We have plenty of space for teams!
WHERE IS IT?
Champaign Centennial High School is at 913 Crescent Drive in Champaign, IL. There is copious parking in our lot.
WHEN IS IT?
Saturday, November 22, 2014. That’s the weekend before Thanksgiving. I anticipate that we’ll have a standard meeting beforehand, at around 8:30, then start playing at 9 or so. You’ll get at least 8 games and should be done by 4 P.M.
WHAT ARE WE PLAYING?
NAQT IS-140, under IHSSBCA rules (untimed, 20/20, 5-a-side, powers, no negs, part-by-part rebounds, 5 seconds for everything except 3-second rebounds and 10-second computation bonus parts.)
WHAT'S IT COST?
It’s $55 for your first team and $50 for each additional team. I'll give you $5 off for a working buzzer system (at most one per registered team) and $20 off for a certified moderator (again, at most one per registered team.)
WHAT CAN I WIN?
Trophies and scoring prizes! Also, this tournament is a qualifier for both the NAQT HSNCT and NAQT Illinois State Championship (2/14?, University of Illinois?)
HOW CAN I REGISTER?
Check out this page. You’ll need an NAQT account. If that’s a problem, please let me know right away and we’ll try to fix that for you!
Thanks and once again, please post any questions here or e-mail me. See you in November!
EDIT: Forgot discounts! Fixed.

CAN I HELP OUT?
We could sure use your help as a staffer, be that as a moderator, scorekeeper, enterer of stats, or in other ways. If you can help out, you'll get to grow our game and see good high school teams play. On top of that, we’ll feed you lunch and, if you can moderate, pay you $20 (we could very much use a few more moderators.) What a deal!
If that sounds like fun to you, please e-mail me. Anyone who can make it is welcome to help out. For moderators, I’ll take the first several respondents who I know can read (or at least who can get someone I trust to vouch for them,) with preference given to IHSSBCA certified moderators. If you know anyone else who might like to help out, by all means please forward this message on to them.

Re: IHSSBCA Kickoff, 11/22/2014 @ Champaign Centennial
Here's a two-week update,
First of all, we've got a large, healthy field, but a dearth of committed staffers (so far.) I'm working to rectify that, but I could use any help I can get! If you know anybody who can moderate, please put them in touch with me and I'll gladly pay them $20 to help out. I could also use scorekeepers and other staff, whom I will feed lunch, though I am unfortunately unable to pay them (savings passed on to you, etc.)
The field has expanded to 30 teams pending its closure later today. I'd like to get to 32 teams and run a power-matching system. I could also run a pooled round-robin format with 30 teams. I'll make that decision tomorrow, once the field is finally closed, but does that sounds okay to everyone, in broad outline?
I've sent out draft invoices to all registered teams, and final invoices to teams who specified their discount eligibility. If you didn't get a final invoice yet and need one, please let me know your discounts (# of buzzer systems and moderators you can bring) and I'll get you one right away. Otherwise, you'll get an invoice at registration.
Finally, if you have any questions, you can go ahead and reply to this thread, or e-mail me and I'll get right back to you. Otherwise, I'll update again shortly when the field closes later today.
See you in a couple weeks,

Re: IHSSBCA Kickoff, 11/22/2014 @ Champaign Centennial
Well, the only thing we're missing for tomorrow is you! All teams have confirmed they'll be here and let me know how much equipment they can bring. Thanks very much for that!
We currently have an empty spot in our schedule, which we're planning to fill with a house team. However, the spot is still technically open to teams as offered. If you have a team with more than 5 players and might want to field an additional team, please let me know tonight.
If you haven't filled in your roster under your registration at NAQT's site, I'd appreciate if you would. Just head over to http://www.naqt.com/registration/field. ... nt_id=5874 and click on your team to put in your roster. It's optional and you're not bound to play who you put there, but if you can give us an accurate roster in advance, that will help the poor souls doing your stats.
In case you didn't know, the tournament will take place at Centennial High School, 913 Crescent Dr., Champaign. If you need directions, just put https://www.google.com/maps/dir//Centen ... +IL+61821/ into any web browser and input your starting address. If that doesn't do it for you, let me know and I can help you out.
Registration and initial meetings will take place in the cafeteria on the first floor. Park in the north lot and head over to the main entrance hall, at the northwest corner of the building. There will be signs to follow from there, but if you go into the east-facing doors that open onto the first floor, it's hard to go wrong (if you find yourself going up stairs before registering, stop and turn around!) If you're supplying staffers, they should meet me by 8:30 in tournament H.Q. (room 239 - follow the signs.)
As previously announced, you can register starting at 8:00. We'll have an initial meeting at 8:45, so if you can't make it by then, you'll need to let me know by phone (in your e-mail) or e-mail. We'll play 5 morning rounds starting at 9, then break for lunch and have some afternoon rounds.
We'll start with 5 rounds of rank-matched games, which with 32 teams will end with 1 5-0 team and 5 4-1 teams. Those 6 teams will play a round robin followed by ACF-style finals for the championship. ACF-style finals mean that overall record counts first, so that the 5-0 team has a 1-game advantage, and that a team whose overall record is 2 games better than the next best team wins without playing a final, and otherwise playoffs determine the winner. Teams outside the top 6 finishing positions will break into pools, which will each play a round robin for final position - your phase 2 schedule will be on your card, so no big deal there.
After the round robin phase, everyone will be invited to watch the finals, and then awards will be given for high scorers and for teams that win their final bracket.
You'll be on your own to get lunch, which we'll give you ample time for after round 5. I'll provide you a list and map to local options, of which there are several.
Finally, here are some finer points of the rules (http://www.ihssbca.org/wp-content/uploa ... 201415.pdf - you'll get a hard copy tomorrow, too) that people asked me and that I'd like to everyone to know:
1. There's no "matching top" rule. Students may wear any clothing that they could wear to school.
2. Teams may play 1-5 players at a time, with substitutions during timeouts, halftime, or before overtime.
3. A team may only play up to 8 unique players. If you've got more than that, you should split your team.
See you tomorrow,

Thanks for asking! Normally, stats & results would have been uploaded round-by-round for you to follow and a link posted & sent out. Unfortunately, that didn't happen this time as we were critically short of staff, so I was the only person in HQ and also the only person doing stats. The net result was that I got stats in through round 5 (barely) in time to announce all-stars.
Full stats should be up tonight or tomorrow at http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/2543/ so check back there soon.

Re: IHSSBCA Kickoff, 11/22/2014 @ Champaign Centennial
Quick results: Bloomington A (10-0) cleared the field to win without need of finals. W.H. Harrison B (8-2) were runners up. University Lab (Urbana) were the top small school (as the only small school in the top pool, Maia.)
Other pool winners were: Electra (#2) - Mahomet-Seymour A, 8-2; Taygete (#3) - Mahomet-Seymour B, 6-2; Alcyone (#4) - Blue Ridge A, 4-4; Celæno (#5) - Cumberland, 5-3; Sterope (#6) - Normal West, 5-3; Merope (#7) - Charleston A, 4-4.
The All-Tournament Team was: Alston Boyd, Bloomington A (100 PP20TH;) Justin Reed, Mahomet-Seymour A (70 PP20TH;) Vinay Koshy, University Lab (Urbana) (61 PP20TH;) Sam Emmerson, Bloomington A (55 PP20TH;) and Evan Johnson, Bloomington B (55 PP20TH.)
We ran about an hour late, so thanks to all teams for toughing it out!
Full results to follow along with stats.

Re: IHSSBCA Kickoff, 11/22/2014 @ Champaign Centennial
Congratulations to our tournament winner, Bloomington A (10-0.) They cleared the field by 2 games to take the championship without the need for a final game. Co-runners-up were William Henry Harrison A (7-3) & William Henry Harrison B (8-2) [see errata 2 & 3 below to see why this is so.]
The top small school was University of Illinois Lab (6-4, only small school in top pool.)
Other pool winners were:
Electra: Mahomet-Seymour A (8-2,)
Taygete: Mahomet-Seymour B (6-2,)
Alcyone: Blue Ridge A (5-4,)
Celæno: Cumberland 5-3,)
Sterope: Normal West (5-3,) and
Merope: Charleston A (4-4.)
The All-Tournament (top 5 P/TH in prelims) was:
Alston Boyd, Bloomington A (5 P/TU;)
Evan Johnson, Bloomington B (3.44 P/TU;)
Justin Reed, Mahomet-Seymour A (3.35 P/TU;)
Vinay Koshy, University of Illinois Lab (3.02 P/TU;)
Sam Emmerson, Bloomington A (2.85 P/TU.)
You can find full results for the tournament and more from the tournament stats pages. Thanks to hsquizbowl.org's Tournament Database for hosting those. If you notice anything wrong with those (e.g. a misspelled name,) you can let me know and I will do my best to fix it.
The following irregular events explain some odd features that keen observers will notice in the results:
1. Washington elected to forfeit its round 8 game and subsequent finals for the Alcyone pool due to travel concerns.
2. Co-runners-up are declared, and the prelims ended with two 5-0 teams, due to the fact that the wrong win/loss result was initially declared for round 4's game between Harrison B and Harrison A. Harrison B in fact won that game, as the results indicate, but were erroneously declared to have lost due to an error in scorekeeping. Consequently both teams played the wrong opponents in round 5. This is very unlikely to have changed any results for teams other than Harrison B and Harrison A, but there's no way to really fix it without re-playing at least 2 (and up to 6) games, and it wasn't noticed by me until late Saturday night, when it was too late to do that! Consequently I have ruled that co-runners-up are the fairest result.
3. Incredibly, another scorekeeping error resulted in the wrong result initially being declared in the round 10 game between Harrison B and Springfield. I am certain that the win-loss result is now correct as listed. The exact final score is not certain, but is close to the listed result. Coach Adkins, Coach Schneider, and both of their teams deserve special commendation for bearing with me with exemplary sportsmanship through the painstaking and unpleasant process of disentangling this issue, the thorough prosecution of which is the reason this recap is reaching you so many days later than is usual.
I think these latter two merit further comment. In the 20 or so tournaments I've run, I've never seen the wrong result announced due to a scorekeeping error even once, much less twice. I apologize to all teams, especially those affected, for allowing that to happen on my watch. I will be more diligent to prevent such errors in future. However, I want to be totally clear that both of these scorekeeping errors were, in fact, certainly simple errors, made by independent parties not affiliated with any involved teams, and no suspicion of wrongdoing by anybody ought exist.
QUALIFICATION
Teams that finished highly at this tournament have qualified for various state and national championships, including the NAQT State Championship (2/14, University of Illinois.) The results of this event will be shared with the relevant sanctioning organizations and qualifiers contacted by those organizations.
HOUSEKEEPING
For teams that have paid at the tournament, you will receive a receipt shortly by e-mail. Several teams overpaid (by as much as $20;) these teams will receive a receipt indicating that a refund is due, as well as the option to have a check sent or to receive credit at a future event. All teams have either paid or promised to, which is great in my book, so thanks! If you need anything further from me, please let me know and I can get it for you.
I have three (only!) lost-and-found items, whose provenance/disposition I am fairly sure of. I will contact the coaches of the relevant teams shortly. If you lost or found something, please let me know and we'll do our best to make everyone whole again.
I hope that if you have any suggestions for this tournament, or things you want to tell me in confidence, please let me know right away by reply to this e-mail. As my record will show, I am willing - indeed, usually happy - to do the work to make these events the best they can for you and your team, but I can't see everything and I can't improve much without hearing where I need to!
Finally, I want to offer special thanks the tournament staff: Dave Adkins, Michael Copley, Tim Coughlan, Lisa Cosimini, Mike Feltes, Nina Hopkins, Chinmay Kansara, Molly McLay, John Morse, Laura Plummer, Lyn Schneider, Rick Sheahan, Donieka Solberg, Donald Taylor, Alison Tomchik, Bill Walsh, Sam Watt, Andrew Weiss. The volunteerism, hard work, and spirit of these folks and people like them are what make tournaments happen, so remember to thank them when you see them.
Wishing a happy Thanksgiving to you and yours,
