This is our first announcement for the Centennial High School Tournament in Ellicott City, Maryland to be held on Sunday December 2, 2012 at 8:30 AM (one day after the SATs).

For our 8th annual tournament, we will be using NAQT set IS-121A. The top 15% of the field qualifies for NAQT’s 2013 High School National Championship Tournament. This question set is an INTRODUCTORY set written to accommodate new players, so this tournament will be ideal for teams new to quiz bowl or new members of established teams.
However, everyone is invited and encouraged to attend, even the most experienced teams.

Registration will begin at 8AM and we will provide our traditional breakfast banquet.

The cost is $65 for the first team and $55 for each extra team. Teams can bring a working buzzer for a $10 discount (but only one buzzer set per team entered).

Centennial High School is located at 4300 Centennial Lane, Ellicott City, MD 21042

What steps are you taking to minimize the number of teams who leave after lunch? Also, will the post-lunch format be the same as last year's?

We plan to re-register teams at lunch to verify their participation in the afternoon. In addition, if we have sufficient participation, we plan to divide the field into a varsity and junior varsity competition (JV defined as freshmen, sophomores, or first-time quiz bowl tournament players). Of course, only the varsity teams will be in contention for qualifying for Nationals.

We have snail mailed flyers to 160 local area high schools to boost participation of new schools to Quizbowl.

This year if sufficient teams register as last year when we had 54, we are planning to have a novice field composed of teams with 9th and 10th graders or teams of any age new to Quizbowl and a varsity field composed of experienced teams. The novice field will have its own trophies but will not be eligible for the NAQT championship tournament. The top 15% of the varsity field will be eligible for the NAQT championship. Obviously teams can elect to participate in the varsity regardless of players' age and experience. We are using this format in order to avoid the 660 to 10 scores in mismatched contests that are frustrating for all involved.

This year we are expecting all teams to stay for the rounds after lunch, and we will require reregistration at lunch to verify afternoon participation.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m., and we will provide our traditional breakfast banquet. For those teams wishing to stay on site for lunch pizza will be sold at registration.

We will have a coaches/parents' round during lunch with fossils/minerals as prizes, the proceeds of which will be donated to the Howard County Special Olympics.

The cost for teams participating in the tournament is $65 for the first team and $55 for each extra team from the same school. Teams can bring a working buzzer for a $10 discount (but only one buzzer set per team entered).

PACE (the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence) has awarded our tournament gold certification. This means that the top 20% of teams in the varsity division(rounded up to the nearest integer) will qualify for the national high school quizbowl championship, the PACE NSC . The qualifying teams will get to register early for the NSC starting on January 1st. The top 15% of the varsity field will be eligible for the NAQT national championship. We will have trophies for the top finishers of the varsity and novice fields.

Eric and Centennial,
Congratulations on reaching such a field size! I'm really looking forward to your tournament. Since this appears to be the largest tournament in the DC area since some time, do you have any advice regarding what you have done for outreach, especially there are a number of schools are coming who don't often compete on weekends? Obviously there are lots of area teams, but it seems that you've succeeded more than most in attracting teams to your tournament, so any tips would I'm sure be welcome. Personally, I'm suspecting that having a separate JV division might be part of it, especially given your numbers in it. Also, seeing that this tournament is attracting this field on a Sunday is noteworthy, and perhaps something for other tournament organizers (including yours truly) to take into consideration in the future.

Thank you to David Madden for the kind words.
David probably recalls that it was his first comment to me after last year's tournament to break the field up into a varsity and novice division (with leeway for upperclassmen with limited experience in quizbowl to play in Novice). I think that was a great idea both for the competition and for creating a manageable size for 2 tournaments running concurrently (in a sense).
I believe successful recruitment for us comes from:
1. Advertizing by snail mail and investing close to $100 in U.S. postage stamps
2. Making sure you have first rate questions that are "easy" by the time you get to the give-away clue (to keep the novice teams in play).
3. Providing a "lavish" breakfast buffet so that teams will be well-fed regardless of the quizbowl experience.
4. Recognizing that we need to get better every year and endeavoring to fix the mistakes of the prior year (e.g. too long a lunch break, teams leaving unexpectedly after lunch).
5. Choosing a date that no one else wants AND does not conflict with major student events (e.g. Homecoming/football season). In our case, we are on Sunday because the day before is SAT day, not because we are trying to break Blue Laws.

I tried to e-mail my team's roster to the Centennial coach but was unable to. I believe something may have been wrong with the return address. Is registering our roster necessary prior to the competition, because I if so then I'd need another way of sending the info to Centennial's coach?

I think they'll be able to work it out either way; they're just trying to get as much as possible set up in advance.

That tournament went pretty good, and was notably better than last year's in terms of delays and such. Blair cleared the field, GM got 2nd, we got 3rd, and Gonzaga got 4th

So which teams from the Varsity Bracket qualified for NAQT and/or Pace Nationals?

I am working on the PACE and NAQT qualifiers by contacting both organizations. I will let you know.
The question is: are the qualifiers determined by ranking within each afternoon bracket (my view) or by final record as reflected in the stats. Clearly teams in weaker brackets can sometimes amass a better record than the 2 worst teams in the top bracket.
We shall see.
Some of our expert forum participants may know but I will submit BOTH.
I'll tell you this. If you have a good case either way, PACE and NAQT have always (in my limited experience) offered wild card entries on that basis.

The question is: are the qualifiers determined by ranking within each afternoon bracket (my view) or by final record as reflected in the stats. Clearly teams in weaker brackets can sometimes amass a better record than the 2 worst teams in the top bracket.
We shall see.
Some of our expert forum participants may know but I will submit BOTH.
I'll tell you this. If you have a good case either way, PACE and NAQT have always (in my limited experience) offered wild card entries on that basis.

Qualifiers are definitely determined by ranking in the afternoon brackets - a team that went 5-0 in the morning and 0-5 in the top playoff bracket would be ahead of one that went 4-1 and then 5-0 in the second playoff bracket.

On a side note, thank you for getting stats up so fast! Very impressive for such large fields, and I'd like to thank you and your team (on behalf of the 18 underclassmen that RM brought today) for a well-run and thoroughly enjoyable tournament.

Somebody needs to create an SQBS package that reports stats by bracket in addition to the final record. That would be most useful.

Just confirming that this is in fact the case- teams from higher brackets always qualify before teams from lower brackets. (And of course we encourage teams interested in attending HSNCT to apply for wildcards.)

The best way to do this is to create distinct files for the prelims and playoffs, then merge them.

EDIT: Looking at the stats, were teams sorted into prelim/playoff RR brackets? If so, why are they not sorted into brackets?

This tournament was lots of fun to help out at, and I think Eric and Centennial did a great job with a larger field than last year. It's great to see a tournament of this size in the DC area, and I think this tournament speaks volumes to some of the concerns about whither the DC circuit that were discussed on the forums last year. I don't know how many holdout teams remain in terms of not appreciating good quizbowl, but I think that very few teams are opposed to it so much that they're not willing to come to a tournament like this. Moreover, the novice/varsity split gets around the issue of "why bother" that might drive newer teams away from competing with what has historically been the strongest circuit in the country in many years. Finally, look out for Phoenixville. They are putting in mega study time, and have improved tremendously even since Seton Hall in September. Great to see a team make such strides in such short time. Congrats to Blair and RM A and all teams who made the top brackets/exceeded their expectations.

Thanks for coming to the tournament, guys! The turnout was awesome, and congrats to all the teams that won fossils or national eligibility! Hopefully, next year's participation will be greater, and people won't cancel or modify their teams riiight before the event. :P
We're talking about it right now in It's Ac club, and I want to say that some of the really happy teams were adorable, hehe.

Were the bought questions better for you, or were the written questions, the year before this one, better? Just wondering.

I'd say maybe next year you could give the A set to only JV, and use a harder set for Varsity, like what Charter does.

I know it's been a while since this tournament happened, but I've only recently gotten around to examinimg the stats closely, and I noticed something peculiar: for the Montgomery Blair vs. Oakland Mills match in round 10, both teams are listed as having ZERO bonus points (and, therefore, "0.00 PPB"). That's obviously a data entry error— especially considering the general awesomeness of both of those teams at this tournament— so does anyone have the actual, correct stats (or at least final score) from that match? Maybe someone from Oakland Mills or Montgomery Blair, if not from Centennial?

It wouldn't really matter except that Oakland Mills was in a final tournament ranking circle-of-death with us and Gonzaga, and playoff PPB was used to break the tie. I don't really have any doubt that the final place rankings were right— both Oakland Mills & Gonzaga had better PPB than us game-by-game in rounds 6 - 9, and really just "seemed" like better teams than us (even though we beat Gonzaga)— but the coach in me feels it's just "due diligence" to make sure my team's final rank was correct and be able to prove it statistically.

Thanks... and please forgive my OCD. It's an illness— I can't help it. ;-)

In regards to recent posts:

I went through all the score sheets by hand (I guess I have OCD also).
The stats need to be fixed (two poorly filled out score sheets are to blame: they affected my calculations on that day also. Apparently the scorer never wrote the total points at the bottom but only a subtotal that went into the computer and into my hand scoring).

ANYWAY, for the circle of death (positions 3,4,5) since Blair A won at 5-0 and George Mason came in second at 4-1:

Gonzaga: PPB for rounds 6-10: 25.20 total points for rounds 6-10: 1875
Oakland Mills: PPB for rounds 6-10: 24.52 total points for rounds 6-10: 1965
Robinson Secondary A: PPB for rounds 6-10 23.19 total points for rounds 6-10: 1610

According to those in the know, I should be using total points for rounds 6-10 in a round robin of the same teams in a bracket. PPB is only used to break ties among teams playing different teams in various brackets in the initial rounds . See the earlier discussion on this blog.

SO, Robinson is in 5th place either way.

Oakland Mills came in 3rd by total points (or Gonzaga in third if we use PPB )
Since I inadvertently gave Oakland Mills third place at the time, and since they did achieve this by the proper metric (total points in the round robin),
I will let the final order stay in place.

Sorry for the confusion.
Circles of death are always messy and frustrating. They are the punishment for the fact that we no longer use single elimination tournaments.
