Ezell-Harding Academic Tournament - September 15, 2012

Save the date!!! The nineteenth Ezell-Harding Christian School Academic Tournament (Nashville, TN) has been scheduled for Saturday, September 15, 2012.

This year we will be using NAQT questions, and because of our school's size, we expect to limit our number of teams again to 48. More information will follow later in the summer.

We have e-mailed the invitations and registration forms for our nineteenth Ezell-Harding Christian School Academic Tournament to be held on September 15, 2012, in Nashville, TN. If you did not receive this information and would like a copy, please e-mail me at RGRummage@gmail.com.

We will again use a round-robin format, and this year we will be using NAQT Questions (IS Set #118). At the conclusion of the morning rounds, we will give each school a copy of the questions used for the preliminary rounds. We will begin with a coaches' meeting at 8:30 (Central Time) and expect to finish the tournament by 3:30 or 4:00.

Our registration fee remains at $60 per team with a four-team limit per school. There will be a varsity division only though jv teams are certainly invited to compete in our tournament.

We anticipate another full field, so please register as soon as you know your plans. We look forward to having you again.

On how the tournament is being run on NAQT, will there be math comp/will the rounds be timed? Also, will the play offs be a single elimination bracket as they have been in the past?

2012 Tournament Format:
Preliminary Rounds – sixteen untimed tossups with sixteen possible three-part bounce back bonuses
Playoff Rounds – twenty untimed tossups with twenty possible three-part bounce back bonuses
We will not be using a worksheet as a part of the competition this year.
We will not be adding points for powers or subtracting points for early incorrect answers.
Time allowances in brief: five seconds to buzz in, five seconds to answer, five seconds to confer on a bonus, ten seconds for anything involving computation

Given the national calibre of your field, any estimate when your stats will be posted so that all can see how the field as a whole competed against the set itself, as well as how they competed against each other in such a gifted field? Not trying to rush you; just naturally curious.

Or at least scores for every game so I can add it to my computer rankings? It seems like this is a very diverse field, and can do wonders for connecting the nation.

Unofficial NAQT Events are those that use NAQT questions but do not adhere to all of NAQT's national standards concerning gameplay, eligibility, and the reporting of statistics.

The results we require are the minimum necessary to issue HSNCT invitations, ie a complete list of the teams attending ranked by order of tournament finish. There are a lot of tournament hosts out there who don't use SQBS (for example, TV shows and local league formats that use non-standard point values).

Hopefully, the Ezell-Harding hosts will eventually post the stats for the tournament. In the meantime, perhaps some of the teams involved in the Championship playoff rounds---Northmont, Chattahoochie, DCC, Dorman, Dunbar, du Pont Manual & Pikeville---can post their own key stats if they have them, given the natural curiosity across the country about the performances of such gifted teams? Alternatively, perhaps they can narrate their analyses of the final rounds, from the Quarterfinals to the Championship, and, possibly, also provide their own assessment of the Set itself, without, of course, giving away any specific information about the questions themselves.

In fact you should not give away general information about the questions themselves, either. Be very, very careful when talking about an active set. --Mgmt

I can fill in the gaps on the Northmont end. No powers and negs were used in the tournament, and bounceback bonuses were in play.

The final eight played out according to seed, with quarterfinal matchups of:

(1) Dorman A vs (8) Pikeville
(4) Chattahoochee vs (5) Dunbar A
(3) Northmont vs (6) Dorman B
(2) DCC vs (7) Manual

In the quarterfinals, Dorman B jumped up 110-10 on us after four questions, but Sam ran off 5 of the next 6 to close the gap to 150-120 at half. We then won on TUs 8-2 in the second half to pull away for a 390-220 win. Sam scored 120 in this match with none of the other Northmont players scoring. (Powers were not used). Northmont had 20 PPB, Dorman B had 18.6.

In the semifinals, DCC jumped up 170-20 after five questions, but again Sam went on a run, picking up 5 of the next 6 to tie it at 210 all after 11. Teams then traded questions through TU 17, with number 18 going dead with Northmont up 10. DCC picked up #19 and 20'd the bonus for a 20 point lead, but Sam picked up TU 20 and we 30'd the bonus for a 360-340 win. Northmont had 25 PPB, DCC had 25.6. Northmont won on TUs 10-9, with one going dead, which ended up being the difference in the match. Again, Sam scored all Northmont points.

The finals against Chattahoochee went the other way, with Northmont jumping up 220-50 after 8 TUs, but Chattahoochee nailed many early buzzes to close it to 260-230 with four to go. The teams traded TUs and 30's on the next two TUs. Northmont picked up TU 19, but only 10'd the bonus and Chattahoochee stole both parts to keep it a 30 point game going to the last TU. Tori from Northmont first-lined TU 20 for her second question of the match, and we 30'd the bonus for a final score of 360-290. Sam scored 80 and Tori scored 20 for Northmont. Northmont had 24 PPB, Chattahoochee had 20 PPB.

Hope that helps- I don't have any details on the other side of the bracket other than Chattahoochee knocked off Dorman A in the other semi.

Thank you for your narrative, Coach Jones. Your matches sounded exciting, especially the last two. A question, however. In your reporting of your PPB, did this include bounce back bonus points, or were these bonus steals computed as a separate "BB" statistic? I ask because at the Princeton Tournament on October 6th using the same set, IS 118, the top 6-8 teams when all was said and done struggled to average 20 PPB for the day, with only a couple doing so, and no one reached 21PPB, and we had some very good programs in the top 8. Thus, either the bonus questions as a whole were a little tougher on this set, or we in this region have a ways to go to catch up to the Northmont's and DCC's of the world, at least if this set is any indicator. Unless, of course, your PPB included bounce back stats. So, curious here in NJ.

No, those stats are the straight PPB not including bounce backs in the total. I think we were around 22.4 for the day, not including bouncebacks. Not sure how the others fared, but I would guess that dcc was probably at least 1 ppb above us, maybe more.
