Re: Pyramidality, Math calculation, and the Goldfish Tournament

...why aren't there more math theory questions? See, now that's what I want to hear! I have a feeling you're going to be enjoying college quizbowl math, my mellow. MaS I have enjoyed college-level quizbowl math. Unfortunately, in Illinois, it would be unacceptable because it would go dead in every ...

Re: Pyramidality, Math calculation, and the Goldfish Tournament

Send me a copy as well. As a player familiar with computational math, I would be interested to see how well students these days do computation math, and whether it is really math theory or simple number-crunching (which is not real math). On a side note, why aren't there more math theory questions? ...

Re: Illinois '08-'09

I would have gotten PAGE 13!!!, but someone beat me. But seriously, I think the scholarships to ACE camp would be a good idea. As a testimonial, I will say that when I first went to ACE camp in my sophomore year, I took the Literature major because no one else on WN was a good lit player. ...

Re: Excel quiz bowl scoresheets

I've tinkered with the mACF to make it suitable for Illinois format. This supports 5-point tossups (blurt rule), 3-, 4-, and 5-part bonuses, bouncebacks, and a tiebreaker tossup+bonus. The file should be attached.

Re: Single-elimination: why it is bad

Now, I'm familiar with the (insert adjective) quizbowl format in Illinois, and almost universally, every tournament has five rounds in the morning followed by single-elimination in the afternoon. I see a couple problems with trying to change this in Illinois. 1. Teams are used to that system of tour...

Re: Bad Negs Again

A gem I had from New Trier Solo's finals last year:

Wrong: My Grandfather's Son (by Clarence Thomas)
Right: Black Boy (by Richard Wright)

What makes this especially bad was that it came after the clues "hanged a kitten" and "joined the Communist party"

Re: Chip's Love of Pyramids! (renamed from NAC legitimacy)

Reading through Chip's summaries, I found yet another Beall steal: From Nationals (Cooper v. St. Mark's at Dallas): "Hawaii as the only state name that, when spelled officially, includes a diacritical mark" From Jeopardy! a few months earlier (February 11, 2008): "It's the only state ...

Re: 2008 Panasonic Academic Challenge updates

Final places
1. Illinois 186
2. Florida 185
3. South Carolina 165
4. Kentucky 147
5. Tennessee 110
6. California 75

On the final team bonus (I'll describe it later), Illinois scored just 9, but that was just enough to hold off Florida, who got 21.

Full commentary coming soon.

Teammate 1: "I think 1 is Virgil"
Me: "FRENCH poets"

5 seconds later

The question wanted one BESIDES the triangular prism.

That question should NEVER have made it to a well-edited set.

I wish to add my two cents. And while I do not intend at all to demean Mr. Dentino (since he is a logistical genius at running the Kaneland tournament so well), I just compiled a few suggestions for improving the question quality at the tournaments in future years, so that a well-run tournament migh...

SECTIONAL PREDICTION CONTEST

Well now that regionals are done, it's time for the: SECTIONAL PREDICTION CONTEST All you have to do is pick the winners of each of the eight sectionals on Saturday.
