There could be a video camera on a tripod set up in just one room and recording for the entire day of competition, with post-editing removing the breaks. That way, no one will have to set up something between each and every round.

tossups purely on children's/YA literature tend to play poorly I'm not sure this is actually reflected in the conversion data (the three YA literature tossups in the 2014 HSNCT had a 96% conversion rate; MSNCT which for obvious reasons calls for significantly more YA lit, had an 88% conversion rate...

If I may interject, no matter what the format you're playing, you're going to have teams absolutely getting creamed. In the local "bad" format I played in High School, the same 7 or 8 teams were always at the top and the same 7 or 8 teams were always at the bottom. This never stopped them...

What about California? 32 of the 200 teams in Fred's rankings are currently in California, it's rapidly gaining popularity here, and players from California have to travel a huge distance (which likely includes pretty expensive plane flights) to get to any sort of camp.

I agree with Matt. If we hadn't booked the hotel room before being informed that the competition wouldn't happen, Berkeley would've just flown home that night. There's no "clean slate" about this.

Of course, nothing beats reading the actual works themselves. If you want to investigate the foundational works of Western thought, I recommend reading material like the Platonic dialogues (particularly The Republic) and Descartes' Meditations on First Philosophy.
