Re: 2011 PACE NSC Hotels and Transportation information
This was roughly the same era. I traveled a lot when I lived in the city, and when I stood in the queue for a taxi I always had to tell the dispatcher that I need a taxi that accepted credit cards. Perhaps that has now changed.

A further word from an almost native: Any of the suburban taxis (American, 303, etc.) are generally good and will pick you up at O'Hare or Midway. If you take a Chicago taxi, keep in mind that most do NOT take credit cards, and quality of service is hit or miss. Also, if it's a typical Chicago June,...

Angelo, your points are well taken with regard to "legitimacy". But Charlie and Fred are right. If you want to promote good quiz bowl, then involving the OSAA is hardly worth it. Continue to do all the promotion you can, it might take awhile and you might end up with a much smaller numnber...

I do use bouncebacks in practice; at tournaments, it depends on the field...I think with mostly competitive teams it makes for exciting games. Otherwise, it really gets frustrating when you have teams that refuse to admit they don't have an answer, but let time run out. It isn't THAT much time, but ...

My two cents worth: If there is a risk of even one slow moderator, then I would have untimed matches. It's not fair to the teams otherwise. As preventive maintenance, though, I would sound out who the moderators would be and avoid any who are ungodly slow....back in the bad quiz bowl era, I once had...

Re: "This makes me feel stupid. I don't think i'm coming back."
There is a downside, though: because of the relatively small number of dedicated staffers, some TDs here are reluctant to go above 24 teams (guilty) because of the lack of more than 15 or so qualified staffers on a given weekend. This means that there are fewer opportunities for B and C teams to pla...

I agree with everything that's ben said, but I do want to add another variable to the equation. Quiz bowl is a competition. I always tell my students that if they just want to do it for fun, then that's fine, but if they aspire to be on the top team, then they're going to have to work at it. This be...

I can vouch for Dawn Treader, where I spent many weekend afternoons when I lived in Ann Arbor (1989-90, so it's been awhile). True, we teach world lit as a separate senior course and some world lit is included in our freshman classes, but I agree few schools seems to do so, and in our examination (we looked at a representative 50 schools) we saw no one that taught anthropology.
