Re: Quizbowl in the "Alternate Universe": Introduction
Since Chris linked to a post of mine from 2014, I'll state for the record that my views have since changed (as seen, e.g. in the penultimate section header here ). Rather than seeing the good quizbowl community as a victorious post-"cold war" superpower, I now see it as more akin to an end...

Re: Quizbowl-"Trivia" Community Relations: What Are They? What Should They Be?
I've had more success breaking the tossups down into 30-20-10-bonus like questions, and reading them a clue at a time and allowing a guess. There is some precedent for this in "trivia" events! You sometimes see questions that give teams multiple (usually 3) chances to submit, which are wo...

Quizbowl-"Trivia" Community Relations: What Are They? What Should They Be?
Special thanks to Rob D, Patrick F, Alan L, Fred M, Pam M, David P, and Austin R for their input and feedback as I drafted this post. More thoughts about the disconnects between qb and "the 'trivia' community," and how and whether we want to bridge them, coming soon. I haven't written mor...

On November 11-14, I went to Kraków, Poland for the second ever "Quiz Olympiad." I'm writing this post to say more about the event, so those in the quizbowl community who might be interested can know more and/or look into similar future events. The event was hosted by the International Qui...

It's easy to forget just how much smaller the universe of good high school quizbowl was nine years ago, and just how inadequate the available offerings would be to teams today -- and were even to teams back then. All of this is good stuff. I want to put in a plug for another resource: other people. How To Avoid Running Out Of Question Ideas
I've written a lot of questions in my day, and one of the most frustrating things about the question-writing process is stalling out while I try to think of question ideas. Even though this is a game where lots of topics come up in questions over and over, it paradoxically can become very difficult ...

At my first-ever college tournament, I asked one of my teammates to punch me, in the hopes that this would give me an adrenaline rush and cause me to perform better in our final game. Thank you for an incredible post, Tamara. It says something succinctly and clearly that I've seen a lot of players struggle to convey about why they find this game so special.
