Re: 2017-18 NHBB Season: Opening Announcements
I guess the idea is more informal than you're describing - the different competitions within IAC share some staff & other resources, and some of the competitions are directly related (NHBB players can qualify for IHO but that's not the only way, etc.). Mostly, though - it's been sufficiently con...

2017-18 NHBB Season: Opening Announcements
The 2017-18 NHBB competition season began in Honolulu this Saturday, and we're looking forward to a fantastic year! We have a few announcements as the year begins. First, NHBB events are part of the new International Academic Competitions network. This doesn't really change how anything operates - i...

NHBB's running several regional events in Illinois this year. My question is "what can we do to make that not the response?" Go into areas that don't have pyramidal MS quizbowl right now. Work to change IESA's question source (I know, this could be a decades-long project, but see if you can get into local leagues and such at first). Go into Northern...

Re: Would You Recommend Working for NAQT? Revisited
Madden's initial pitching of USABB to me was a direct analogy of HSNCT:NSC::MSNCT:USABB - that both would coexist nicely and boost the overall MS circuit, rather than try to cannibalize each other for market share. The fact that the MS circuit essentially only had a few NAQT MS sets, the then-annou...

Everything David said is correct. Everything Bruce said is correct. There's almost no tournament written at a difficulty level where the giveaway shouldn't still be definitional - and for most countries, that's geographical clues. Even at Chicago Open, you shouldn't really be giving away Albania wit...

I agree with Jacob - a tossup on Arthur Schopenhauer in a regular difficulty HS set is essentially a trumpet call to the world declaring that you can't come up with an interesting, accessible idea in philosophy and instead are subjecting new teams to a dead tossup. You can a) do what DCC does and just write questions and read them to your teammates which is great practice or b) just write a ton of questions on your own and encourage and teach newer players to do the same.
