Re: Help training a math player for quiz bowl

I'll echo what was said above about Mathcounts. I did Mathcounts in middle school which helped a lot when it came to computational math in high school quiz bowl. You may want to look in particular at the countdown rounds in Mathcounts, because rather than being a written test like the other parts of...

It's now been two weeks since the September 22 deadline, and the next deadline is today. A submitted packets update would be great.

Nationals?

April is a long way off still, but it appears to me that no announcement has been made yet regarding the date or location of either national championship tournament this year. So I was just looking for some sort of update in this regard to help with planning in the spring semester. Thanks!

If you're not sure where to begin as far as which subjects to study, just start learning what is interesting to you. It will be more fun if you learn more about topics that you already like. Keep in mind too that no one in quiz bowl is expected to know about all the areas of the distribution. Rather...

With regards to trying to get teams who only compete at NAC tournaments into good quizbowl, I'd like to share something we tried at VCU when I was there in 2015-16. Knowing that there were teams in Central and Southern Virginia that competed on Battle of the Brains each year, but who did not regular...

Re: 2017 ICT bids

Teams which are awarded host autobids are given the benefit of the doubt because they were unable to play SCT and earn their bid. My problem with your suggestion regarding team-splitting is that it takes a bid away from a team that earned it. To avoid this problem, one must look at a fix prior to SC...

Re: 2017 ICT bids

Why can't NAQT just be like - Don't team split. If you do we know who you are and won't give your shitty B team an invitation. Obvious for Maryland this year, but for something like Michigan this year or in the past when Chicago had like 2-mid tier A teams it'd be harder to police. Yes it's subject...

Re: 2017 ICT bids

There has been much discussion about this year's ICT invitations, and for good reason. But despite all the hubbub, I think there are a few simple things which are quite clear and which we can agree on. 1. Nothing can be done about this year's bids to ICT or the size of this year's ICT field. The inv...

Re: 2017 ICT bids

A random thought: would it be at all feasible to give any and all hosting bids in D2, with the expectation that teams get their newer players to staff SCT and must qualify their A team "at the buzzer"? I think there would be considerably less outcry about teams being bubbled out of D2 than D1 (and ...

Re: 2017 ICT bids

*The UG auto-bid is only given out if there are a certain number of UG teams present and if a minimum D-value performance is reached. I also wonder if you accept an UG auto-bid, there should be a stricter requirement that your ICT team must be UG. I think this is already the case; there has to be a...

Re: 2017 ICT bids

I have to agree that reform to how automatic bids are issued and expansion of the field at ICT are both needed. There is no way that the 14th highest D-value should justifiably be left out of the field at ICT. I'd also like to point out something that I don't think has been brought up before, probab...

Re: SCT, autobids, and ICT size discussion

So after all that, I'm not defending us playing ICT, we had no right to be there. What I want to know is why NAQT is still giving hosts autobids instead forcing those teams to qualify? This is a valid question. It seems to me that the reason for host autobids is that it allows for teams who had to ...

Re: SCT, autobids, and ICT size discussion

I also wonder if it's worth loosening the criteria under which teams are no longer allowed to compete in Division 2. Obviously, the top high school players who routinely romp the top of the field each year shouldn't be allowed to come back and do it year after year. But should teams in the bottom h...

Re: Rocky Mountain Sectionals (Boulder, CO; February 4, 2017

I would also like to point out that this is not the first time a school has earned a bid to ICT by qualifying at an SCT site outside their normal region.
