Re: Online Quiz Bowl Can Be Improved

The one hand system is working well in the UK. I really don't think it's exhausting at all, it's quite easy to be in a comfortable position for it. There are other ways of achieving the same sort of thing (e.g. an external webcam so that the keyboard can partially seen or most of someone's torso is ...

Re: Running Zoom Tournaments

I just can't wait for there to be a Discord Video tournament, as I believe there is to be soon. For 2 months or so I've heard idle speculation about Discord video and how it'll perform well for tournaments, and yet no one seems to have thought to run a proper tournament using it. Will be very intere...

Running Zoom Tournaments

A couple of weeks ago, the UK ran a mirror of Terrapin Open on Zoom. This worked really well, and I think it is a far superior option to Discord. For one, it makes cheating much harder, which stands in stark contrast to Discord, which (it seems to me at least) is rife with cheating and cheating accu...

Oxford Open Science Writers/Editors

Oxford Open will take place in early February this year, and we're having a little bit of a problem finding science writers. If anyone was interested, we would happily pay people a proportion of the total profits of the tournament (which usually gets mirrored in quite a few places in the US and gets...

Re: Why don't we have 1/1 math?

This is completely wrong. Math shows up everywhere in the chemistry and physics distribution, and indeed probably poses the biggest barrier to entry to trying to understand the physics distribution. Applications of mathematics also shows up in some biology and social science subdistributions, compu...

Re: Why don't we have 1/1 math?

As someone who is not a huge fan of most subfields of earth science, it's way more than just "geology and physical geography." Off the top of my head, there's also geophysics, atmospheric science and meteorology, hydrology (encompassing ocean science, freshwater science, and stuff about g...

Re: Why don't we have 1/1 math?

No one studies space geo (this isn't quite true, but I do agree that space geography tends to be overrepresented in the astronomy distribution), so that means you shouldn't fill the astronomy distribution with space geography. It does not mean you should completely delete the astronomy distribution...

Re: Why don't we have 1/1 math?

For the Oxford Open this year we reduced the chem distribution to 11/13 and used that to ask more other sci, which in practice meant around 1/1 maths.* It was fairly easy to do this we thought, and I don't think the results seem all that odd. I think the claims that 1/1 maths *can't* be done are jus...

Re: Oxford Open Tournament Atlantic Mirrors 2019

Just a reminder that this set is available for mirroring. If there's sufficient interest, it will be Americanized. The reviews for it this year (if people don't mind me saying it) were pretty good and I think people would have fun playing it. It's definitely the most "normal" quizbowl set ...

Oxford Open Tournament Atlantic Mirrors 2019

OOT is running again in the UK in February and we are offering mirrors of it from the end of March onwards. The set is regular difficulty, with a focus on easier answerlines in the science distribution due to the field it is played on in the UK. The set will be Americanised, hopefully with the help ...

Re: ACF Fall 2018 - Specific Questions and Errata

As has been mentioned elsewhere, the Briticisation team had some more holistic problems with the set, in terms of both difficulty and in terms of small errors etc. I'll probably weigh in at some point on the first point, which I think partly gets to heart of what ACF Fall is actually for, which I do...

Re: Question Feedback

Thanks for the feedback. Will definitely take those points on board, particularly the point about the distribution of lit tossups - this was partly the result of the Americanisation process. I didn't really think about the distribution of the lit too much when I wrote new questions, which will have ...

I'm bumping this to remind people that the set is still available for mirrors. It's now fully Americanised.

If there's no more interest in physical mirrors, we will have an online mirror of the set at some point fairly soon.

OOTAM: Oxford Open American Mirror

This is an announcement for the OOT American Mirror. This has been talked about some time but for various reasons never got off the ground. The new committee has decided that this will indeed happen and it will be fully Americanised. The Americanisation process will be overseen largely by Daoud Jack...

Re: Mirroring British Tournaments

Apologies, this slipped through the net. We now have a new committee and we are going to discuss what to do with OOT in the US/Canada in the near future. It can either be played in its current form (it's not hugely British, but it does have some egregious British content) or with some Americanisatio...
