This. Definitely got to say I've had a great time playing quizbowl, though.

Re: Trash in Academic Tournaments

but as per pyramidality, someone who's played a game will always have an advantage As it should be! And read a book or seen a play or listened to an opera. Oh no opera questions are unfair because not everyone listens to Wagner. I'm not arguing against pyramidality. My intent was to suggest that, u...

Re: Trash in Academic Tournaments

I'm not sure about video games in Trash. What bothers me is that the games themselves, the primary source material one can go to in order to best prepare for answering the questions, are a lot more expensive to gain access to than materials for other categories. You don't have to get a first-edition...

Re: Tips on How to Get Better on Quizbowl

This tip also gets tossed around quite a bit, but that's because it's good advice: write questions. In many cases, researching and placing clues in questions you submit makes you more likely to remember those clues when they come up than if you just read them in a packet. Any time I manage to get so...

Re: VCU Open discussion

I also enjoyed this set, particularly the film tossups (Renoir and To Catch a Thief, especially) and felt it had really solid lit as well. I accept responsibility for the history in my packet, which included the ill-conceived Carlowitz and Kamakura tossups, as well as responsibility for Tagus river ...

Re: ACF Nationals discussion

Phil: as a statkeeper and a quasi-assistant TD (I was effectively in charge of the part of the tournament in Seigle), I feel that I did my job as well as I could. I agree, especially on the stats part. Being able to check stats on my teammate's iPhone on the drive back was awesome. During the buzze...

Re: ACF Nationals discussion

I'd like to state that I enjoyed not only this tournament, but my entire first-year ACF/NAQT experience. It's a great feeling to discover exactly how much I don't know, and I've met and played against a lot of awesome people. I think, also, that it's important for me to mention that this was my firs...

Re: ACF Fall Midwest @ Truman State (11-8-08)

I'd like to add my thanks to the pile: to Truman State for hosting, and to all the staffers and moderators for being very nice and professional and contributing to what, for me, was a good first experience with ACF. It was a bit longer than I'd imagined, but no big deal. No complaints to register, b...

I'm the captain of Missouri State's CBI regional team. At the moment, I'm not aware of any attempts, current or past, to send teams to any of the other formats. I think that's the lack of knowledge factor over anything else--I didn't even know ACF or NAQT existed until I happened upon you guys about...
