Re: (No signature for Anonymity Reasons) Dealing with Toxicity in QB

You should make sure that your coach/teachers/other authority figures are aware that this happening, because this is coming across like bullying. If you’ve made them aware and they aren’t willing to step in, perhaps question them why? It seems your experience is being directly affected by this. You...

Dealing with Toxicity in QB

This has been an issue since I started. Several members of my team are like this. But. There is a Particular member on my team that repeatedly chooses to be blatantly rude and condescending towards me nonstop at QB practice and tournaments. It is definitely a hindrance on by play (I do well at tourn...

Preparing From Benet's and Masterpieces of World Literature

Hi folks,

I have access to a copy of both of the titles above. How would one study from these? And if you've used these, how did you do it? thanks

Re: Your Worst Moment In Quizbowl

My whole freshman season due to some bad-mannered teamates (Which I have learned to ignore, and unfortunately I have to be on a team with them again) These 2 folks really like/liked to bring up my short-comings at every chance they can get. And just demoralize(d) me. At one point i just lashed out a...

From your signature, I'm assuming that you're in HS, and in a well-developed quizbowl area, so personally I think you should focus your resources on attending physical events You'd be right that I'm in HS. Granted, One could argue that the KC area is absolutely horrendous, but really there are 3 sc...

Participating in Online Tournaments

Hi. I see a lot of Online tournament mirrors and was curious as to how one would go about participating in one of these types of tournaments. Also, how does one go about beginning to play online games on Skype and Discord?

TL;DR: Study what you want, but arts and lit may be best.
Thanks for the Input! I appreciate how in-depth. You were definitely in my shoes. I came to that conclusion as well. Hence why I created a thread for Art History Cannon.

Re: Art History Cannon in QB and Reading Reference Materials

You might want to take a look at my list of books and other resources If you're looking for an actual book, Thanks for the response! I have troved through that list at various times, including at 3 AM at one point. It is ridiculously valuable. As for a book I'm not so much interested in that. Smart...

Art History Cannon in QB and Reading Reference Materials

Thanks to folks on my "Generalist/Geography Specialist Desiring to Branch Out" thread, Art History was one of the recommendations. Going back through previous threads, Michael Powers had found a site called Smart History for art history study, but that begs the question, Where should I start? On top...

Re: Generalist/Geography Specialist Desiring to Branch Out

Hey, so I also started out as a geography specialist and expanded from there (though I was a generalist once I reached high school). I'd strongly encourage you to study history (what grade is your teammate in? If he's a senior then you'll need to replace those points next year) Hi there, I see you ...

Re: Generalist/Geography Specialist Desiring to Branch Out

Unlike geography, in which one specialist can rather easily power half the questions, history is a subject that you can always have multiple specialists in, due to its distribution and other factors. Even if your teammate gets the lion's share of history questions, there will always be gaps on toss...

Re: Generalist/Geography Specialist Desiring to Branch Out

The above advice all holds true - there should be nothing wrong with you also specializing in history. To provide a more direct answer to your original question, based on your interests, it seems like other aspects of fine arts might be an easy access point for you (art and history are interwoven i...

Re: Generalist/Geography Specialist Desiring to Branch Out

There's no such thing as "stealing" points. Whoever buzzes first gets them. That's always good for your team—you increase your chance of beating another team to the question. (It's of course fair for your teammate to think that your efforts would be better spent in another part of the distribution....

In general, if you feel there is a subject that you are interested in (especially if it's one of your team's weaknesses), that would be a good subject to branch out to.

Re: Generalist/Geography Specialist Desiring to Branch Out

If this keeps happening, either you, your coach, or your captain needs to have a talk with him and tell him that shadow effects exist and he's not entitled to points. Oh trust me, I have had various talks with my coach. I've got 2 teammates who are quite "Pissy" with me, every "wrong" move i make t...
