Re: 2019 Canadian Player Poll

2. Rein Otsason (212, Highest #2, Lowest #5, Median #2) 3. Aayush Rajasekaran (206, Highest #2, Lowest #5, Median #3) Sigh... I fear it may look like I have some vendetta against Rein, but conscience compels me, etc. etc. Also, the McGill chat challenged me to produce a compelling argument for my (...

Re: 2019 Canadian Player Poll

I'll extend the deadline on this until May 20th to give people some more time to get ballots in.

Re: 2019 Canadian Player Poll

I guess the bottom line is this: polls like this are defined by their eligibility requirements. If, for instance, I had just said in the initial post that this was a Canadian player poll and that people should submit 25 players on their ballots, then it would certainly appear that anyone playing at ...

Re: 2019 Canadian Player Poll

Thank you, Naveed, for going back 3 years to find a poll that had substantially different eligibility requirements to prove a point that is clearly not true anymore. Each of the last two polls have had basically identical eligibility to this year's version, and I recall complaints about Rafael not b...

Re: 2019 Canadian Player Poll

I suppose I could amend the description to make it absolutely clear that the "Canadian" here refers to the circuit and not the country overall, but no one (to my knowledge) has ever actually interpreted the poll this way until you started posting--indeed, if you actually took the name literally and ...

Re: 2019 Canadian Player Poll

The poll is not meant to be putatively national, as the eligibility requirements should make clear (you will note that someone who lives in the US has been included on every ballot submitted so far). The Canadian circuit refers to the players who play tournaments in Ontario in every context that I'v...

Re: 2019 Canadian Player Poll

Unfortunately, PNW players are ineligible given the stated eligibility requirements. There have been comments to this effect on previous player polls, but I guess the best answer is that the task is to determine the best players on the (Eastern) Canadian QB circuit, not the best players who currentl...

Re: 2019 Canadian Player Poll

1. Derek So Not much I can say here. Derek’s the only Canadian QB player who truly ranks among the game’s elite players. Reading for McGill A at Regionals and watching Derek 30 bonus after bonus was quite an awe-inspiring (or perhaps soul-crushing) experience. 2. Rein Otsason It’s been a great privi...

2019 Canadian Player Poll

I’m pleased to announce the 2019 Canadian player poll, consisting of players in the Canadian circuit! This will be run mostly the same way as the poll last year, with a few eligibility changes. Anyone is eligible for the main poll who played at least one of 2019 ACF Regionals or 2019 SCT in Canada o...

Re: ACF Nationals 2019 discussion: Question Content

The history was also good, although I thought there were a few issues with balance between different topics. I found there were too many tossups that focused extensively on French kings in the Middle Ages and Renaissance in this tournament; 3 strikes me as excessive. In the packets I played, I don'...

Re: ACF Nationals 2019 discussion: Question Content

I enjoyed the music in this set quite a bit and thought the subdistributing was generally very good both by era and by genre. I think that a tossup on each of Josquin, Tallis and Couperin might have been a bit much, especially considering that Bach didn't come up in the packets I played. There also ...

Re: ACF Nationals 2019 - 4/27-28/2019

I'll also note that the revised later date will make it much easier for Canadians to attend given that it is pretty much after our April exam season finishes. The earlier date in past years has been a barrier for several people who've wanted to attend Nationals.

Re: Canadian Player Poll 2018

I’m generally basing this ranking on Nationals/Nationals-minus difficulty. Let me know if you think I've made some grievous error--I spent a decent amount of time looking over various stats from the year, and relied quite a bit on the ACF Regs advanced stats. I know I'm ranking myself higher than th...

Re: CMST: General Discussion

Overall I very much enjoyed this tournament--thanks to the editors and writers. I particularly enjoyed the thought questions, and very much appreciated the prominence given to modern theorists, although I will note that at times the tossups could seem a bit too much like lists of academics and their...

Re: PB 2017: Specific Questions Discussion

I thought there was a lot of good writing in this set in my categories (history and classical music, mostly). I particularly enjoyed the tossup on the Seljuks and the bonus on Nazi-era conductors. That being said, there were several questions that I think had some issues. The hieroglyphics/Egyptian ...
